Navigating through Federal Student Loan Repayment

 Defaulting and/or late payments adversely impacts the following areas:  1) job applications, as credit checks are run (especially for government jobs)  2) home loans, car loans, personal loans all require credit checks. Late payments or student loan default adversely impact loan approval

 It is a good idea to verify loans both with your servicer(s) such as SallieMae, as well as with NSLDS. NSLDS is the national database that contains all loan information. HOWEVER, be careful, as data is not always the most current, as transactions between schools, lenders, servicers (buying and selling of loans, changes in who is servicing the loans) take time to post.

 While in NSLDS, click on every loan and print the information. You can create an Excel spreadsheet with all the information to facilitate keeping track of payment dates, interest rates, principal amount, servicer, etc.  Compare information on your loans with your servicer information (SALLIEMAE). NOTE: Loans may be owned and serviced by the same servicer. It is important to obtain the exact amount owed, who owns your loans, and who is servicing your loans!

 In order to decide whether or not to consolidate your loans, it is a good idea to:  first amortize all loans to determine how much interest will be paid over the life of the loans.  Research the various resources for consolidation to compare  Decide what will benefit you the most at this point in time.
