6 UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND College of Agriculture and Natural Resources C  M  R  E  C Upper Marlboro Facility Historical Beginnings  Tobacco has been an important crop since the 1600’s, especially in southern Maryland  Around 1900, cooperative research on tobacco began with USDA at the Marlboro Fair Grounds  Tobacco was among the first crops studied by the College of Agriculture Equal access programs

7 UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND College of Agriculture and Natural Resources C  M  R  E  C Upper Marlboro Facility Historical Beginnings  In 1947, the University purchased the 202 acre Tobacco Research Farm from Percival Burroughs for $47,000  Operations were moved to the farm from the Fair Grounds Equal access programs

8 UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND College of Agriculture and Natural Resources C  M  R  E  C Upper Marlboro Facility Historical Beginnings  An additional 12 acres was bought from a neighbor, totaling 214 acres  Nearly 20 years later, a slice of the farm was transferred to the State Highway Department for road expansion  The farm has been 202 acres since the late 60’s Equal access programs
