2 Define the job of the CTO. Use the descriptions in this chapter, but augment that description with knowledge from the Internet. Besides basic definitions of CTO, read interviews with practicing CTO’s. A good place to start is http://CIO.com. A chief technology officer (CTO) often heads the technology group. The CTO evaluates new technologies, new ideas, and new capabilities and identifies those that are most relevant to the organization. The CTO’s job requires deep knowledge of information technology and the ability to envision and innovate applications in the organization. Ray Ozzie, who was Microsoft’s CTO from April 2005 to June 2006, says that his job description entitled watching over the company’s technical strategy and product architecture. Craig Mundie who was also one of Microsoft’s CTO’s worked with Bill Gates to develop the company’s global strategies around technical, business and policy issues. 3 Given your answers to parts a and b, write your own CTO job description. List your major responsibilities; make them particular to the company that you chose for part a. A CTO is someone who is in charge of the entire technological department. In order to have such a role, they must be up to par on their knowledge of items and ideas in the technological field. They have the final say in what methods those beneath them use when it comes to taking care of problems that relate to their field. With Microsoft, the CTO must know all of the Microsoft products like they know the back of their hand and need to know how to take care of any problems that may relate to them. They must also know what other companies in their field are also doing so that they can make sure that Microsoft is one step ahead of them when it comes to the quality of their products.
