2 Day 4 By the end of class, students should be able to: –Manipulate paragraph styles and insertions in Word –Use the editing functionality available in Microsoft Word –Identify a variety of decisions associated with editing –Identify ways to strengthen assignment submissions What we’ll do… –Discuss assignment 1 –Explore formatting concepts and Word –Explore editing concepts/strategies and Word

3 Post Assignment 1: Feedback on Solution Presentation – Mostly effective in communication – Repetition of graphics and information in some – Structural hierarchy can be tighter in some Poster – Caught the attention of the audience – Can be less text intensive

4 Software: Style and Paragraph Style Definitions: –Style – a named collection of formats –Paragraph style – a style that applies to all text in a paragraph (text between two paragraph markers). Question: What are the benefits and drawbacks of making use styles (particularly the pre-defined styles of heading 1…9 and capture)?

5 Software: Styles in Word How do you: Determine what style is in use Format text according to a style Modify a style Create new style Understand why changing one style (particularly normal) can affect other styles Make styles work for you – inserting a table of contents (figures, tables)

6 Software: Inserting and Word Framing question: Based on your prior experiences (and your imagination), what are some of the types of objects you can insert into a Word document? For these objects, what are some of the parameters you might change to format the object? Demo

7 Post Assignment 1: Suggestions for Reflections Design Rationale –Point out a higher level decision and elaborate on all the associated lower level decisions. Include alternatives considered. Professional activity statement –Point out an important activity, explain why it is important and elaborate on all the associated smaller activities. Learning Reflection –Add self imposed goals that goes beyond the requirement of this class.

8 Software: Editing Tools and Word Locating the functionality –Menu –Toolbar –Context sensitive options Phase 1: Making Changes –Turn on track changes –Exploring what changes are showing –Make changes to the text –Insert comments Phase 2: Accepting/Rejecting Changes

9 Software: Editing Tools Exercise Step 1 – Create editing opportunity –Identify a design rationale for feedback –Create a word document with the rationale Step 2 – Offer editing services to a peer –Switch computers with someone, and edit their document (some tracked changes, some comments) Step 3 – Address editing comments you received –Return to your own document –Review changes – decide to accept or reject.

10 Editing - Discussion Editing Exercise: What lessons emerged from the editing exercise, particularly lessons related to the upcoming assignment? Electronic Editing in TC…: What are the main ideas raised by the Dayton article on electronic editing? How are these ideas related to the upcoming assignment?
