3 Introduction The topic of the Civil War is for a sophomore level high school class, and this lesson will help the students better understand the significant battles of the Civil War and their outcome.

4 Objectives The objective of this lesson is to help high school level students better understand the significant battles of the Civil War, as well as their outcome. This will also help them better understand where the battles took place. The lesson will be followed by a quiz, which will allow the students to access the knowledge they gained from the lesson.

7 The Battle of Bull Run This is the first major battle of the Civil War. It occurred on July 21, 1861 It took place in Virginia The leader of the Union Army was General Irvin MacDowell, and the leader of the Confederate Army was General Joseph Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard. The Union Army was defeated by the Confederates

9 The Battle of Antietam The Battle took place from September 15 to the 17 in 1863 It is sometimes referred to as the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. It was considered a Union victory and Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation following the victory The union was able to win because Lee lost his battle plans and they fell into the Union Army’s hands.

11 The Battle of Gettysburg It occurred from July 1-3, in 1963. It took place in Pennsylvania It was a union victory The leader of the Union Army was General George G. Meade and the leader of the Confederate Army was lead by General Robert E. Lee It was the Confederate attempt to invade the north but it was a Union victory. The three day battle resulted in a total of 51,000 casualties This battle had the largest number of casualties

13 Siege of Petersburg It was a series of battles that took place from June 15, 1864 through March 25, 1865 The leader of the Union Army was Ulysses S. Grant, and the leader of the Confederate Army was Robert E. Lee The Union Forces cut off supply routes, and the confederates have difficulty receiving weapons and other supplies Union victory
