slide 1 sCVD Diamond for the CMS Pixel Detector 14--15 May 2004 R.Stone, Rutgers J.Doroshenko, L.Perera, S.Schnetzer RD42 Collaboration Meeting Overview of CMS Pixels Testing Starting min-Aug. at CERN SPS Testing at FNAL Q4 2004 Summary Vers 1.2

slide 2 CMS Pixel Detector Total 70M Pixels 10-20 thousand cm2 of active sensors

slide 3 CERN SPS Testbeams: Aug 04, Oct 04 Piggy-back on PSI-Zurich testbeam telescope and analysis Sensor only test: PSI30 readout chip in “transparent” mode –Pixel size: 125x125 microns –Edge-on or Vertical orientation to beam –In 3Tesla field to study Lorenz drift Use sCVD diamond and compare to equiv. silicon detectors Need ~2 ‘small’ sCVD diamond pieces > 3x5 cm2: –Aug. test un-irradiated sensors –Sep. irradiate sensors –Oct test irradiated sensors

slide 4 Beam, Magnetic field Trigger PIN diode(3x6mm) Pixel Array (22x32) of 125  mx125  m one pixel size X4,Y4 plane (50  m) X3,Y3 plane (50  m) X2,Y2 plane (50  m) X1,Y1 plane(  m) Beam telescope and pixel setup view. The Test Beam Setup

slide 5 The test beam setup Beam telescope and pixel installed between two Helmholtz coils, maximum magnetic field 3T, and pixel is cooled down by Peltier cooler.

slide 6 CERN H2 SPS Test Beam Measurements 1.90 0 between pixel plane and the beam, no magnetic filed, to study charge collection efficiency, signal, noise; 2.15 0 between pixel plane and beam, no magnetic filed to study depletion depth, trapping effects, also for alignment for the Lorentz angle measurements; 3.15 0 between pixel plane and beam, 3T magnetic filed to study Lorentz angle

slide 7 Fermilab Testbeam Fall 04 Use final version of readout chip: PSI46 Test of pixel detector: Sensor and readout chip together –Pixel size: 100x150 microns –Irradiated vs non-irradiated detectors: Silicon and Diamond –Rutgers telescope: 1 micron extrapolated track resolution –1-2 KHz DAQ rate (but spill is 0.7s every 60s!) Use sCVD diamond and compare to equiv. Silicon detectors –Hit efficiency –Position Resolution –Threshold minimization Need 1 or 2 sCVD diamond pieces 1 cm2

slide 8 Cosmo - Hardware: PSI 46

slide 9 Cosmo Pixel GUI

slide 10 Cosmo DAC screen

slide 11 Cosmo ADC Tool

slide 12 Testbeam Run Control Gui

slide 13 FNAL Testbeam DAQ Overview

slide 14 PSI 43 Calibration Analysis

slide 15 IZM 34B chip0 (1x2) at T=-20C Thresh, Pedestal, Gain Address levels, Charge Pulser Calibration analysis

slide 16 Summary Two testbeam oportunities in the coming months: –CERN SPS: Diamond vs Silicon sensor comparison Lorentz angel Resolution Signal / Noise –FNAL: Sensor + Final Readout chip Hit Efficiency / Threshold Resolution Need 2 smaller sCVD for CERN (small ROC), 1-2 larger pieces for FNAL (final ROC)
