5 Modernizing and the ILS Create our own database of records Records will date from July 1976, initially Catalog serials in OCLC Catalog monographs in ILS Serials control Holdings True OPAC OPAC products

6 These Times They Are A Changin’ 600,000 cataloging records since July 1976 During ILS implementation:  Record clean-up  Batch load to OCLC & CDS  Backlog reduction  Making necessary workflow changes

7 Impact of Changes Recognize that changes at GPO will affect libraries and vendors Practices among depositories are divers; impact will vary from library to library GPO will work with stakeholders to minimize impact  Keep open lines of communication

9 Retrospective Conversion Plan Contract retrospective conversion services (brief MARC records) Cooperative cataloging projects Record sharing agreements w/agencies Retrospective conversion by GPO staff

10 OBS, GPO, OPACs & Access Create comprehensive National Bibliography Use power of ILS, OPAC & federated search Create new tools and services Seek more proactive role in the professional arena by involvement in  Standard setting bodies  Federal activities such as the Interagency Committee on Government Information
