MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 Center for Energy and Processes (CEP) Sophia Antipolis 1 Integration of distributed generation 2 Biomass-hydrogen Research activities Linked to the Microcheap Area Research activities Linked to the Microcheap Area 3 Modelling the impact of dispersed generation on low voltage grids

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 Center for Energy and Processes (CEP) Sophia Antipolis 1 – Research activities linked to the integration of distributed generation General objectives : û To assess the technical and economical constraints linked to the integration of dispersed electricity generation into electricity grids û To develop specific control algorithms, including prediction techniques, in order to help better and larger integration of RES û To develop simulation tools

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 Center for Energy and Processes (CEP) Sophia Antipolis 1 – Research activities linked to the integration of distributed generation Ongoing EUROPEAN PROJECTS : MicroGrids and More MicroGrids û Control algorithms for microgrids RISE : û Integration of DG in Croatia and east balkan coutntries DINEMO û Integration of DG in Pre-accession countries

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 Center for Energy and Processes (CEP) Sophia Antipolis 1 – Research activities linked to the integration of distributed generation Links with MicroCheap : Most of the european "integration projects" consider only RE systems (wind, PV, solar, …) and "classical" micro-cogen (fossil driven) A link is easy to make if simple models are available for biomass micro-cogen units

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 Center for Energy and Processes (CEP) Sophia Antipolis 2 – Research activities linked to the Biomass-Hydrogen chain Objective : û To analyse and to develop new technologies for the biomass- hydrogen transformation û To analyse and to develop PEM FC based systems for cogeneration

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 Center for Energy and Processes (CEP) Sophia Antipolis 2 – Research activities linked to the Biomass-Hydrogen chain Projects û Catalytic reforming of bio-ethanol û Reforming processes in cold plasmas û Gazeification of solid biomass (collaboration with the Center for Energy and Environment in Albi and with the N-GHY company, a startup in fuel processors for fuel cells) û Project EPACOP, test in real conditions of 5 demonstration plants, equiped with 5 kWe PEM FC (using natural gas).

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 Center for Energy and Processes (CEP) Sophia Antipolis 2 – Research activities linked to the Biomass-Hydrogen chain Links with MicroCheap : Research is today focussing on technological bottlenecks MicroCheap could help to compare various cogeneration chains : û NG/turbine or engine û Biomass/H2/FC û Biomass/Stirling û…û… In terms of efficiencies, emissions, …

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 Center for Energy and Processes (CEP) Sophia Antipolis Objective : û Under an hypothesis of massive integration of small distributed generation systems in low voltage grids, to assess the compatibility of electricity injection with technical grid constraints û Methodology : adaptation of classical load flow grid modelling to the case of distributed electricity injection û Tool developped : JPelec 3 Modelling the impact of dispersed generation on low voltage grids

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 JPélec : a mini-grid simulation tool for steady-state studies Load-flow calculation (Newton-Raphson algorithm) Classical power network components Renewable energy and distributed generation components Simulation over 24 hours with one hour time-step Graphical user friendly interface Accurate models Weather module to estimate radiation on inclined plane Free (cf www-cep.cma.fr/Public/title_soft/title_soft_jpelec/view) This software is dedicated to 3 types of users : engineering and design departments universities research centers

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 A mini-grid simulation tool for steady-state studies Simulation and view options

MicroCHEAP – Athens – September 2006 Center for Energy and Processes (CEP) Sophia Antipolis Links with MicroCheap : At the moment, only models for RE and fossil cogen units Easy link with MicroCheap : to develop models for the various biomas/cogeneration alternative 3 Modelling the impact of dispersed generation on low voltage grids
