6 5 Breakthroughs and Major Achievements TechnologyState-of-the-ArtBreakthrough Modeling UMTS Power Saving with Bursty Packet Data Traffic Previous work on Power Saving assumed Poisson Traffic (Zheng, R., Hou, J.C. and Sha, L., University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign) Our work proposes a general model for bursty packet data traffic Supporting seamless vertical handoff for next generation heterogeneous all-IP 4G systems by utilizing the multi-homing feature of SCTP Previous works select an appropriate transmission path based on the signal strength, bandwidth or round trip time delay (V. C. M. Leung, University of British Columbia) Our work designs criteria to select the best transmission path by considering the bandwidth, round trip time delay and power consumption at the same time  Core Networks

7 6 Breakthroughs and Major Achievements TechnologyState-of-the-ArtBreakthrough Designing and implementing mechanisms to support network mobility (NEMO) with fast mobile IP (FMIP) capability over next generation heterogeneous all-IP 4G systems Previous works consider the issues for NEMO and FMIP independently. The NEMO without FMIP layer- 2 support usually suffers from significantly long delay, which is intolerable for real- time multimedia applications (M. Calderón, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid) Our work designs and implements mechanisms to integrate NEMO with FMIP and resolves the resultant tromboning routing  Core Networks
