“On The 9” Improving the Future: Thinking Strategically With Maps In collaboration with Navigation Technologies, the Chicago Public Schools, and the DePaul Center for Urban Education Noe Villalobos, Yasmin Quinones, Denise Villalobos Chavez Upper Grade Center In Chicago

Introduction We are looking at current transportation routes and trying to improve them for the future. We are trying to make them better, safer, and more convenient. We started by researching three different locations; Loyola University, IBM Plaza, and Ford City Mall. We chose Loyola University for this project because it was the most challenging one.

Analysis of Current Route No Security: few surveillance cameras, No policemen/ watchmen Few seats: not very comfortable Too much time spent waiting for the bus Too many stops: time consuming Expensive bus fare #9 route is short

Current Route to Loyola U. On the current route to Loyola U. we have to take three buses just to get there because the #9 route ends about ¾ of the way there. This takes about 2hrs.30min. minimum.

155 9 47 Pershing 39 35 Fullerton 74 Belmont 77 Loyola U. Lake Michigan The change that we made to the #9 route is that we extended it, making it go further north. This makes it easy for us to get to Loyola U. without having to take 3 buses this also cuts our time by 45 min making it 1hr 45min as oppose to 2hrs30min. Proposed route to Loyola

CTA Way Same 1.3 buses to get to Loyola 2.2hrs 30min 3.Stops every block 4.Less seats: not very comfortable 5.Low security 1.2 buses to get to Loyola 2.1hr 45 min decreased by 45 min 3.Stops every other block 4.More seats:more comfortable 5.Police/watchmen surveillance cameras 6.Digital maps Maintain same size Would still be the #9 route Our Way Venn Diagram-Compare Contrast

“The Smart Bus” Digital map Emergency button Temperature display Display of how many people at the next stop Watchmen/policemen, and surveillance cameras Digital bus schedule Display of handicapped people waiting at the next bus stop Display to show people how much longer they have to wait for the next bus to arrive Display of bus capacity

Summary With the current #9 route there are some difficulties and inconveniences that are to be experienced. These include fewer seats, less comfort, expensive bus fare, low security inside the bus, more bus stops and unnecessary time wasted. With our “smart bus” there won’t be any wasted time or expensive bus fares. However, there will be more comfortable seats, more security and extra added features like digital maps, emergency buttons, and a bus route all inside the bus.
