2 College of Design 2 ½ years old -- a Wave 1 project Committed to U of MN vision Small to mid-sized unit –1400 students (350 graduate students) –$4.9 million R & O (e.g. contracts, grants,& endowments)

14 Center-Sustainable Building Research CSBR Mission: Working to transform the built environment in ways that provide for the ecological, economic, & social needs of the present without compromising those of the future. --through research, outreach, & education

15 People CSBR staff includes architects, psychologists, mechanical engineer College faculty collaborate on projects Other University faculty collaborate on projects ( i.e.,CFANS, IT) Funding Federal: Departments of Energy, Housing and Urban Development, and Transportation, EPA State: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, MNSCU, Departments of Administration, Commerce, Transportation, and Natural Resources County: Hennepin, Dakota and other metro counties Other: McKnight Foundation, Wilder Foundation, Target Corporation, Green Communities Program Photovoltaic panels on Rapson Hall roof Hydrogen is generated from solar energy and stored in tank. Fuel cell uses hydrogen to produce pollution-free electricity

18 Community Outreach: Direct Design Assistance (DDA) program Typical project areas: Housing Green space Mapping + analysis Urban revitalization Educational materials DDA provides one to two weeks of working days of technical assistance to help solve design and planning issues. MDC works with small cities, neighborhoods & other nonprofit organizations.

19 Recent DDA projects Common Ground Meditation Center, Minneapolis Created design concepts for a meditation garden and rain gardens Station Area mapping analysis for the West Bank Mapped two alternative LRT station locations and the amenities within walking distance to help with plan for future transit
