HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Welcome, Matt Solid doors, made virtual.

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Initial Conception The Problem  Lack of information passing between office inhabitants and potential visitors, esp. when door closed  Inability to understand state of office from hallway  Inability to understand state of hallway from office  Door not best indicator of interruptability  Office inhabitants may want to close door, yet remain interruptable (e.g., for silence)

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Why Doors? Doors as media and mediators  Doors are media  People can use their doors to express themselves to others  Doors are mediators  Doors are gateways that limit person-to-person interaction.

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Today Our Work  Two studies of doors  Door Artifacts  Door Actions  Brainstorming  A list of design ideas  Implementation  Door awareness system  Door projector

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Overview  Door Studies  Idea Development  Implementation  On the horizon…

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Door Studies A Study of Artifacts  We looked at the artifacts on several hundred doors around Carnegie Mellon. A Study of Actions  We spent seven hours observing hallways and taking note of person-door interactions.

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Studying Artifacts Some doors Art & Posters Sign-up sheets Lecture Announcement Message board Checkout list (on clipboard) Clock Covered window (~80% of windows seen)

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Studying Artifacts, cont. “Please do not slide papers under my door” “Please do not slide papers under my door! Put them on the chair.” “Please do not move this chair” An interesting door

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Studying Actions A Selection of Observations  People glanced in doors as they walked down the hall.  Person stopped in front of a door, tried to listen to activity in the office, but did not knock.  Person left their door open when they stepped out, to let an arriving visitor know they were going to be right back.  Person walked around outside an open door, to let the person inside the office know they were there.

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Organizing Data Step #1: Condense information into small chunks and group it appropriately

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Organizing at Higher Levels Step #2: Condense information into small chunks and group it appropriately

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Overview  Door Studies  Idea Development  Implementation  On the horizon…

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Developing Ideas Brainstorming  Array of jornadas  Sensors to tell what's behind the door  Door access log Door projector State of door(s) at a distance (desktop app?)  Projected window / muscle wire  Privacy - abstract representation Virtual door – “door message from a distance”  Physical tokens for interruption  Ephemeral display (e.g., heat)

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Physical Tokens of Interruption 1.Visitor walks up to a closed door. 2.Instead of knocking, they choose a token from the bin by the door. 3.The visitor pushes the token through the slot in the door. 4.The sound and motion of the token coming through the door may interrupt

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Door Awareness  Doors have sensors to monitor their state (open, ajar, closed)  The state of the doors are broadcast on the net What is the state of a given door?

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Door Projector  Uses a door with a window  Image is projected onto the door, overlapping the window  Private/public display space

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Overview  Door Studies  Idea Development  Implementation  On the horizon…

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Implementation Door Awareness System Statuslight Door Projector

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Door Awareness Pieces  Door circuitry  WinCE software  Web pages (PHP)  mySQL database

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Door Projector Pieces  Inverter program  Post-It ® Notes program  Active Desktop  Statuslight HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001

Statuslight Pieces  Desktop application  Web pages (PHP)  mySQL database

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Overview  Door Studies  Idea Development  Implementation  On the horizon…

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Looking ahead…  Group usage of the door projector  Door interaction  Abstract indicators of activity  Displaying history & trends of awareness data  Analysis and iterative improvement

HCI PROCESS & THEORY DARREN GERGLE, JEFFREY NICHOLS, AND JACOB O. WOBBROCK DECEMBER 10, 2001 Thanks!  It’s your door…Use it!  Thanks to…  our advisor, Jodi Forlizzi!  our officemates!  For more information  E-mail one of us: dgergle@cs.cmu.edu jeffreyn@cs.cmu.edu jrock@cs.cmu.edu  Visit our web page: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~jeffreyn/class/05771/
