Steel as a material; Important Properties, Design Methods, Introduction to LFRD, Introduction to Manual. 1 & 2 2 Tension Members Strength, Net Area and Effective Net Area, Capacity, Slenderness Ratio. 3 Tension members Design, Single Angle, Double Angles, Built-up Member, Tie Plates. 4 Bolted Connections High Strength Bolts, Pretension, Shear Connection, Single & Double Shear, Bearing and Slip-critical Type Connection, Design for Shear, Combined Shear and Torsion. 5 Combined Stresses with Shear and Tension and Shear and Moment (only slip-critical type). 6 Welded Connection Fillet Weld, SMAW and ASW Process, Throat, Stresses Grove Weld, Weld Symbols, Simple Connection, Balanced Weld. ii

4 Combined Bending and Axial Load
Week Topic Contents Chapters 14 Combined Bending and Axial Load Introduction, Interaction Eqs., Cm Factor, End Moments, Lateral Load. 12 15 Miscellaneous Column Base Plate for Axial Loads; Introduction to Common Building Connections, Concept of Simple and Moment Connections. A set of homework problem shall be assigned weekly, solved homework shall be returned the following week. 2) A project involving design and detailing shall be assigned to group of students and collected at end of semester.
