3. Purpose of the Research  To investigate the interrelationships and synergies between learning a second language and learning about its culture  Always important, but even more so in this age of globalization

4. Details of the Project We are focusing on the following languages and cultures: Blackfoot Mandarin French Spanish

5. We intend to…  (1) identify if teachers find it important to teach a second language along with its culture  and if so, why they find it important.

6. We intend to….  (2) document a range of approaches to teaching a second language and its culture by collecting examples of learning experiences and learning resources that practicing second language educators use.

7. Interview Topics 1.Why they believe it is important to learn about a culture and its language together. 2.What aspects of the language-culture nexus they take up with their students and why they emphasize these. 3.What pedagogical issues related to teaching cultures in second language classrooms arise for them. 4.What obstacles to students’ understanding of a second language and culture the teachers regularly encounter, and how they work to overcome them. 5.What learning experiences, assessments and resources they find to be the most beneficial for their students.
