Job Hunting Notes Michael Bieber IS Department College of Computing Sciences

Where to Look IS Field: Association of Information Systems http://www.aisnet.org/placement/enter/ Cost: $25 User Name: aisplace02 Password: mj5902

Timing Recruiting starts now in August at the AIS conference So you should be contacting potential recruiters in July already! (use email) Recruiting at ICIS in December for research schools Recruiting at Decision Sciences in Fall for teaching schools and lower-level research schools

At Recruiting Conferences Business cards are helpful Dress well Bring copies of your recruiting package, with a quick summary sheet at the top Be prepared - know about the schools if possible Feel free to take notes Don’t “hound” recruiters, but feel free to contact them politely Have a 45 second description prepared about your research. (Also use it when people ask how you are doing in the hallways :-) Have fun! (see next slide)

Have Fun! Recruiting should be fun! View it as a chance to meet one-on-one with future colleagues Maybe you’ll find future research collaboration! You’ll be meeting these people many times in the future, so you’re establishing a relationship Most professors view Ph.D. students as junior colleagues (after all, we were all there once :-) so there is no reason to be shy. Think of it as talking with your advisor...

What I look for... The potential to be an outstanding researcher and good teacher A Web site (can be different from AIS format) Evidence of good teaching A full list of publications (showing author order), including papers in progress and where they are targeted. Include links. Dissertation title, abstract, advisor and committee Research (and Teaching) statements. Informative cover letter

Interview/Job Talk Go prepared. Study their Web site. Practice your job talk several times. Ask people to ask you hard questions during the practices! Don’t be afraid to answer “I don’t know” to a question. Include a slide or two about CCS and IS during your talk to reinforce the high quality of your background. Have fun!
