7  Designed by three organizations – the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the Association for Manufacturing Excellence, The Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence and the American Society for Quality – this alliance has established the standard for continuous improvement and lean practices.  In 2010, the American Society for Quality joined this collaborative alliance.

8  In 2008, SME’s Certified Engineering Manager credential was merged with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ EMCI program. In 2009, upon the decision by ASME to dissolve EMCI, the American Society for Engineering Management agreed to develop an equivalent program to carry forward the work of certifying engineering managers. Effective July 1, 2010, ASEM will provide continuing registration for EMCI certified individuals and new processes for the certification of engineering managers.
