1 Welcome to EDINA Digimap Digimap is an EDINA service offering online access to a range of spatial data. It is authenticated using the UK Federation and is available to all higher and further education institutions. Digimap contains several data Collections. Your institution must subscribe to each Collection. This usually involves an annual fee. The licence conditions for each Collection may differ. This demonstration shows the various facilities available to access Digimap’s Ordnance Survey Collection.

2 Go to http://edina.ac.uk/digimap and click Login

3 Select your institution and login using your institutional username and password NOTE: users must register their details with EDINA before being able to login. This can be done online and users will automatically be prompted to register if they have not already done so.

4 Digimap offers several Data Collections from the Collections page. Choose the Collection you wish to use Note: your institution may not subscribe to all Data Collections

5 You must agree to the terms of use before gaining access to the Collection

6 Each Collection has a number of facilities which provide access to the data. Roam is a simple mapping tool

7 Select a location by place name, postcode or using the map

8 The map is a fixed scale but will fill your window according to its size.

9 Double-click to zoom in or use the zoom slider bar.

10 Customise map using check boxes in Map Content Control

11 Change the map shown by zooming in and out.

12 Zoom through to detailed maps which use OS MasterMap data. These maps can also be customised.

13 Save map to My Maps and give your map a name.

14 Print to PDF in A3 or A4, portrait or landscape using the drop-down menus.

15 Now try Carto, the advanced mapping tool

16 Carto is a Java applet, and is launched as a separate application. It needs a fast internet connection

17 Find an appropriate map using gazetteer, postcode, or national grid coordinates Zoom and pan using map tools to change the map size covered

18 Use a location map to find your area of interest

19 Customise map using check boxes on legend panel

20 Now try Gazetteer Query: look up place names and display their locations on a map

21 Enter the place name you wish to find. Use the matching criteria if necessary

22 Click View Map next to the appropriate place name. A map of the chosen place is displayed in a pop-up window

23 Gazetteer Plus allows you to search for and download specified sections of the 1:50,000 Scale Gazetteer

24 Specify place search term, feature type, geographical area and attributes to return

25 Results displayed on screen; Can also download as a file

26 Data is delivered online: right click and “Save As” to download it

27 Now try Postcode Query: look up your postcode on a map

28 Enter your postcode and click Go. A map and the attributes of your postcode are displayed

29 Facilities for downloading data are under Data Download Services

30 There are different facilities for downloading different types of data. Data Download offers digital map data

31 First, choose the data product and the format you require.

32 Then choose the area you need data for. Search by: map place name postcode data tile name grid reference easting/northing

33 Refine your search if necessary

34 Click on the map or the tile list to highlight data tiles you need

35 Choose compression options for your data delivery. Warning: some files can be very large and take a few minutes to retrieve

36 Data is delivered online: right click on the link and choose Save As to download it

37 There are different facilities for downloading different types of data. Try the Boundary Download

38 Choose either postcode data or boundary data, by product and format

39 Choose postcode area

40 Choose postcode districts

41 Choose compression options for your data delivery

42 If downloading Boundary Line, select data theme

43 Choose compression options for your data delivery

44 Help Pages are available from every page of the service interface

45 Help Pages contain information about how to use the service, how to use the data in GIS, product details and software links

46 Staff and Site Representatives have access to additional information

47 Site Representatives have access to detailed usage statistics for their site

48 All tools available to the user can be accessed from the home page
