2 Baird Middle School Goal It is goal of the Ludlow Public Schools to use current and future technologies to increase student achievement and to develop true 21 st Century literacy. 3 Information and Instructional Technology Mission The Ludlow Public Schools will provide leadership in the use of district and building-based technology resources and services that support the Technology Action Plan. The mission of the Technology Department is to provide reliable, efficient and effective access to information, applications, and tools necessary to facilitate an informed and progressive learning environment.

5 Technology Action Plan Goals  Goal 1:  Goal 1: All students will be prepared to excel in the community, work place, and in our global society using 21st century skills.  Goal 2:  Goal 2: All educators, including administrators, will attain the 21st century skills and knowledge necessary to effectively integrate educational technology in order to enable students to achieve the goals of the core curriculum content standards and experience success in a global society.

6 Technology Action Plan Goals - Continued  Goal 3:  Goal 3: Educational technology will be accessible by students, teachers and administrators and utilized for instructional and administrative purposes in all learning environments, including classrooms, and library media centers.  Goal 4: Baird Middle School  Goal 4: Baird Middle School will establish and maintain the technology infrastructure necessary for all students, administrators and staff to safely access digital information on demand and to communicate virtually.

7 Technology Action Plan Goals - Curriculum   Educational technology will be infused across all curricular areas:   Aligned with both the most recent version of the Massachusetts Curriculum Content Standards and   The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards, and   Focused on student centered, problem-based, real-world curricula to attain 21st century skills.

8 Technology Action Plan Goals Curriculum - Continued   All students will demonstrate proficiency with educational technology, information literacy, expert decision making and complex communications.   Instruction and content materials will be universally designed to assure access for all learners through technology.   Technology will be used to pursue academic excellence for every student by supporting instruction that is within and beyond the school walls.   All students and learning communities will have ubiquitous, equitable and barrier free access to on-line resources and other distance learning technologies.   Research will be conducted to identify both emerging and promising practices in educational technology so that students will continue to excel in the community, work place and in a global society.

9 Scenario  Current Environment  Computers and equipment only in ITT’s computer lab. Not available for general use.  One computer lab with 20 outdated computers to be shared by all classrooms.  Teachers for English and Social Studies only have a portion of students in computer class at the same time. 10 Desired Outcome  Technology integrated into classroom curriculum.  Increase student achievement and engagement in writing.  Provide alternate avenues for students with different learning styles and abilities.

12 Research Shows... that students with access to a Word Processor, improved their writing skills, both electronically and on paper, by a significant percentage.

13 Technology combined with the following instructional strategies improves student performance:  Jigsaw cooperative learning: Activities used in different areas where students can learn a skill and share and learn skills from other groups in class.  Differentiated instruction: Computers provide music, sound, videos, interactive websites to enhance differentiated instruction resulting in all types of learners doing better.  “ Moments of Discovery” where learning can be accomplished using technology tools in a short period of time.

14 Proposed Solution:  Provide two NEO2 carts (30 per cart) to the 6 th Grade English and Social Studies teacher to improve writing.

15 Proposed Solution:  Install 4 Desktop computers in the each 6 th Grade English and Social Studies Classroom (20 total) to support continued work with written projects.  Provide Microsoft Office, Inspiration, and other software application support.  Installation and training for teachers prior to school year start.

18 Desired Outcome  Begin to build a foundation for all classrooms to participate in collaboration, sharing, and connecting with live online resources around the world. Support of ISTE standard for students (Collaboration and Communication)  Technology integrated into classroom curriculum.  Provide alternate avenues for students with different learning styles and abilities.

19 Proposed Solution  Computer Projector in all classrooms  Netbook for all teacher classrooms to be used with Projector. Netbooks are a cheap computer alternative for fast internet access and classroom viewing  Document camera for each classroom for ease of mobility  Free installation of Skype software

20 Proposed New Equipment Use   Provide access to the Internet and multimedia content in all learning environments for students, teachers, administrators and staff.   Form strategic partnerships with other school districts, educational institutions and the business community to share fiscal and programmatic resources.

22 Professional Development Model Goals   All educators, including administrators, will participate in ongoing, sustained, high-quality professional development activities focused on infusing 21st century skills into curricula and instructional practices.   All districts will provide professional development opportunities and technology support for educators, including administrators, in order to enhance proficiency in the planning, funding and implementation of integrating technology-based resources and in assessing technology integration.   All school administrators will model the 21st century skills necessary to provide effective and informed leadership that supports the infusion of educational technology and encourages learning beyond the school walls.   All supervision and evaluation practices will address the effective use of educational technology for student achievement of the Core Curriculum Content Standards and success in a global society.

23 Strategic Actions in support of the BMS Professional Development Goals   Continue partnering with organizations that provide professional development opportunities and educational technology conferences that demonstrate technology skills and infusion of technology into the curriculum.   Plan for the electronic delivery of state assessments, either formative or summative, that can quickly return results and analyses to educators and parents/legally designated caregivers.   Assist in the revision of the Professional Standards for Teachers and School Leaders to specifically require technology literacy and 21st century skills in the preparation of teachers and school leaders.   Promote the use of the Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA) developed in a collaborative effort among many organizations and adopted by ISTE.   Sponsor professional development activities that will model the use of technology and include follow-up online interactive components.

24 Professional Development Model Implementation   My 6 month ITS Technology Plan will set the mode for providing the training needed by our staff and educators in developing their knowledge and use of 21 st Century Skills.   Includes:   Connecting and collaboration with corporations, organizations, and classrooms around the world. All core curriculum areas.   Building of PLNs and PLCs for personal collaboration and learning.   Developing a class web site accessible by students 24/7 for assignment availability at school or from home   Participating in after school and lunch time provided Technology PD   Participating with school blog   Learning and utilizing webinars and other online learning to become life-long learners.

25 Technology Action Plan Summary  This concludes the Baird Middle School 2 year Technology Action Plan  It is important to remember that this is a living document, and it is my hope that this plan and the results I obtained from the school assessment survey and resulting PD timeline will result in improved incorporation of technology and the support of ISTE Standards for Administrators, Teachers, and Students throughout the Baird Middle School.
