2 Introduction In the Pacific context, one of the major challenges for Power utilities is unacceptably high losses (both technical and non-technical). In the Pacific context, one of the major challenges for Power utilities is unacceptably high losses (both technical and non-technical). One the counter productive measure is the deployment of load flow analysis systems that rely on maps and data extracted from GIS systems for load flow calculation purposes. One the counter productive measure is the deployment of load flow analysis systems that rely on maps and data extracted from GIS systems for load flow calculation purposes. Such data includes cable types, length, fuse ratings, transformer ratings, customer consumption, etc. Such data includes cable types, length, fuse ratings, transformer ratings, customer consumption, etc.

3 The Problem GIS data and maps are uploaded manually to the Load Flow Analysis software. This creates duplication of work and effort. GIS data and maps are uploaded manually to the Load Flow Analysis software. This creates duplication of work and effort.

4 What a GIS can provide With GIS software like MapInfo, it provides a programming component MapBasic. With GIS software like MapInfo, it provides a programming component MapBasic. With MapBasic coding, it is possible to do load flow analysis within the GIS without having to manually re- digitize the spatial entities in the load flow analysis software, let alone having to input the data.
