Waste Management Water Quality Odor Tourism

Illegal discharges are not uncommon on hog farms. Hog waste runs off from fields into nearby streams. Waste can leak from lagoons, and fertilizer sprays in fields pollute shallow ground water. In 1998, state inspections documented more than 115 illegal discharges from hog waste lagoons.

Hog factories discharge waste into streams and rivers in several ways. –Illegal waste discharge from hog waste lagoons. –Waste run-off from farm fields into nearby streams. Hog factories contaminate ground water and drinking wells. –Contamination with excessive levels of nitrates. –Hog farms not required to monitor the leakage from lagoons. Effects on wineries and tourists.

Smell emitted from hog farms isn't attractive Respiratory problems can be aggravated from the odor from hogs. Winery employees may be subject to significantly more tension, depression, anger, and fatigue. This is due to the odor, which maybe affect tourist experiences. Summary: Due to direct & indirect effects of odor, tourism in the area may decrease, negatively affecting the local economy.

Smell-unattractive to tourists. Number of tourists will decrease. Amount of money spent on local businesses will decrease because of the decrease in tourists. Summary: Tourism is very important to our community. With the construction of a hog farm, the number of tourists will very likely decrease, which would have a huge impact on our community and the region’s financial stability.

Hog farming would have a negative impact on local businesses and the region’s economy. The offensive odors of hog farms would make many people avoid visiting our local wineries. In summary, the Seneca Lake Winery Association opposes establishing hog farms in the Seneca Lake area.
