GLAST Large Area Telescope: Manufacturing Preparation Design Engineering Meeting Jerry Clinton 1 April 2003 Stanford Linear Accelerator Center Stanford, CA Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope

Procurement Process Flow

Manufacturing Requirements Drawings and specifications must be released Parts and materials must be listed on PIL and must be approved by PCB or MPRB as appropriate All parts and materials must be issued from flight stores Completed flight assemblies must be kept in flight stores Work must be authorized via an approved Assembly and Inspection Data Sheet (AIDS)

Manufacturing Process Closed loop –Parts and materials issued in kits from stores –Kit is assembled, tested, and inspected –Delivery of assembled kit to stores closes the loop –Maintains clear traceability of parts, materials, and finished flight items Approved AIDS is required to start the process –Applies to fabrication, assembly, test, and inspection Does not apply to fabrication where supplier procures raw materials –If work is to be performed by a subcontractor, their travelers should be attached, or PO should require supplier to make them available for review by SLAC and Government personnel

Manufacturing Process - Continued Stock room verifies item is ready for manufacturing prior to pulling kit –Drawings and/or specifications released –Test procedures released –Parts approved Completed AIDS ends the process –Last step is to deliver to stores

Assembly and Inspection Data Sheets AIDSs are LAT work orders –Authorize taking parts and materials out of stores and performing work to manufacture flight hardware –Defines operations executed to fabricate, assemble, and test LAT hardware items –Provide traceability from raw materials to finished flight items –Required for all LAT manufacturing activities including outside fabrication and assembly LAT-MD-01624 –AIDS preparation instructions –Provides some guidelines on work instruction preparation Accessed from Quality Assurance web page
