23 Don McClainW. 65th St. church of Christ - March 20, 2005 1 Corinthians 1:17 - Barnes 1 Cor. 1:17 (NKJV) For Christ did not send me to baptize, It doesn’t matter WHO baptizes you? Baptism is not essential? (1.) that which Paul here suggests, that if the apostles had themselves baptized, it might have given occasion to strifes, and the formation of parties, as those who had been baptized by the apostles might claim some superiority over those who were not. (Barnes Notes on The New Testament – 1 Cor 1:17)

24 Don McClainW. 65th St. church of Christ - March 20, 2005 1 Corinthians 1:17 – Affirms Our Position 1 Cor. 1:17 (NKJV) For Christ did not send me to baptize, This passage affirms our proposition! Understanding the problem: (1:11-13; 3:1- 7)Understanding the problem: (1:11-13; 3:1- 7) Paul emphasizes the importance of belonging to Jesus Christ:Paul emphasizes the importance of belonging to Jesus Christ:  Jesus mentioned 11 times in first 10 verses of chapter 1.  Paul states the criteria for spiritual ownership, i.e. belonging, relationship.

25 Don McClainW. 65th St. church of Christ - March 20, 2005 1 Corinthians 1:17 – What is The Criteria - Negatively This passage affirms our proposition! 1 Cor. 1:17 (NKJV) For Christ did not send me to baptize, (1:12,13)  Blood – 1 Pet 1:18,19  Baptism –Acts 18:8;2:38 1 Cor. 1:12-13 (NKJV) Now I say this, that each of you says, "I am of Paul," or "I am of Apollos," or "I am of Cephas," or "I am of Christ." [13] Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?  Paul did not die for them!  Paul did not baptize in his own name  Therefore: They could not be “of Paul”  Paul did not die for them!  Paul did not baptize in his own name  Therefore: They could not be “of Paul”

26 Don McClainW. 65th St. church of Christ - March 20, 2005 1 Corinthians 1:17 - What is The Criteria - Positively This passage affirms our proposition!  JESUS DIED FOR THEM  They were baptized in the name of Christ  Therefore: They belonged to Christ!!  JESUS DIED FOR THEM  They were baptized in the name of Christ  Therefore: They belonged to Christ!!

27 Don McClainW. 65th St. church of Christ - March 20, 2005 1 Corinthians 1:17 – What & When? Rev 1:5 & Rom 6:3 1 Cor. 1:17 (NKJV) For Christ did not send me to baptize, Romans 6:3-4 (NKJV) Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? [4] Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Rev. 1:5 (NKJV) and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood,

28 Don McClainW. 65th St. church of Christ - March 20, 2005 1 Corinthians 1:17 – Anyone could baptize 1 Cor. 1:17 (NKJV) For Christ did not send me to baptize, It doesn’t matter WHO baptizes you? Baptism is not essential? Anyone could baptize – but not just anyone could perform the work of an apostle!

29 Don McClainW. 65th St. church of Christ - March 20, 2005 1 Corinthians 1:17 – Baptism is essential 1 Cor. 1:17 (NKJV) For Christ did not send me to baptize, It doesn’t matter WHO baptizes you? Baptism is essential? Anyone could baptize – but not just anyone could perform the work of an apostle!

30 Don McClainW. 65th St. church of Christ - March 20, 2005 1 Corinthians 1:13-17 – Context – What Is The Meaning? 1 Cor. 1:17 (NKJV) For Christ did not send me to baptize, 1 Cor. 1:13-17 (NKJV)... Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? [14] I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, [15] lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. [16] Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. [17] For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.

31 Don McClainW. 65th St. church of Christ - March 20, 2005 1 Corinthians 1:17 – The meaning is clear – Paul Did Not Baptize In His Own Name! 1 Cor. 1:17 (NKJV) For Christ did not send me to baptize, Paul did not baptize in his own name! Paul did baptize Crispus and Gaius, and the household of Stephanas by the authority of Christ in obedience to the command of the Lord. If baptizing makes the cross of no effect – then Paul made the cross of no effect when he baptized anyone. Had Paul baptized in his own name, he would have made the cross of no effect!!! Mr. Cook’s interpretation of this passage contradicts Matt. 28:19.

As we study the Bible as a whole, we see that it is the first step of obedience for the new believer.” (Gene Cook Jr., Exposing The International Church of Christ, Page 35)
