2 The period. is used to show the end of a sentence or used in an abbreviation. Use a period at the end of a sentence. He went to the store. If quotation marks are used, the period goes inside the quotation marks. Mary said, "I went to the store.quotation marks Use a period to mark the end of an indirect question. The only question he asked was about the way she learned to drive. Use a period for a command, request, or suggestion that sounds like a question. This implies an action and not an answer. Would you see who is at the door, please.

3 Use a period for an elliptical expression that stand for a statement or command. No. Of course. No way. Shut the door. When you use the period to end a sentence, make sure you start the next sentence with capital letter. He went to the store. She went to the house... Use a period after an abbreviation. Dr. Mr. p.m.

4 The question mark ? Use a question mark when there is a question. The question mark shows the end of the sentence when there is a direct question. Where did you go? If quotation marks are used, the question markquotation marks goes inside the quotation marks. Mary asked, "Where did John go?" If the question is not part of the quote, then the question mark goes outside of the quotation marks. Did the professor say, "No test on Friday?" The question here is not about the test, but what did the professor say.

5 If the accuracy of the information is in doubt, put the question mark in parentheses ( ). He had four (?) dogs in the car with him. The dogs may have been running around and it would be hard for him to count them.parentheses If the sentence is written like a statement, but it sounds like a question, use a question mark. 6 The placement of the question mark is determined by the location of the question within the sentence. Set off the question by commas: I can see my dog, can't I, whenever I want?commas The question follows a comma or colon: The question is, What are you going to do now? The question begins the sentence What are you going to do now? is the question.

7 The exclamation mark ! Use an exclamation mark after an expression that shows strong emotion, a command, interjection, or emphatic statement. interjection Don't you do that! If quotation marks are used, the exclamation mark goes inside the quotation marks.quotation marks John yelled, "Don't do that!" If the exclamation is not part of the quote, then the exclamation mark goes outside of the quotation marks. I can't believe he had the nerve to say, "That's not my fault!" The exclamation here is not what he said, but the strong emotion of the person hearing what he said.
