4 Brief History The California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education had its origins in a series of meetings in 1990 among graduate deans and their staffs from the University of California and California State University systems. The meetings focused on finding ways to enhance the recruitment of underrepresented students into doctoral programs. Thus, the idea of the Forum arose. The Forum was designed to tap the growing pool of highly qualified undergraduate and master's-level students already attending California colleges and universities.

5 Registration Packet Your Student Packet will include: –Map –Program Booklet –At-A-Glance Workshop Handout Workshop times and locations are on one side with workshop descriptions are on the other side. –Pencil –Lunch Ticket –Evaluation Form

6 Get Organized Take a moment to: Review the schedule of workshops; Prioritize the workshops that you want to attend and schedule accordingly; Schedule time to meet Graduate School recruiters between 11:50 am and 3:00 pm.

7 Graduate School Fair The Graduate School Fair is from 11:50 am to 3:00 pm. There are over 120 Graduate School recruiters participating in this event. Visit a school that you are not familiar with…many have wonderful graduate programs with full funding!

8 When Talking to Recruiters Remember to: Stay focused--you are short on time. Introduce yourself--State your major, academic standing and the area graduate study that you wish to pursue. Ask for a business card so that you can send additional questions and follow-up thank you note. Obtain graduate program materials.

9 What Should I Ask Recruiters? Do you offer a doctoral program is my field of study? What kinds of funding does your institution offer graduate students? What reasons have students given for selecting your university/college over others? Do you have a special graduate school visiting day? If not, when is the best time of year to visit? What is the weather like in ____________?

11 Lunch Student lunches will be available from 11:50 am to 1:30 pm Lunch tickets are in your registration packet. Vegetarian food options are available.

12 Evaluation Forms In exchange for returning your completed Evaluation Form, you will be provided with the opportunity to take a practice on-line GRE. After taking the practice test and having it scored, a diagnostic evaluation of your strengths and weaknesses will be sent to you along with FREE access to The Princeton Review's on-line GRE prep course.
