Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Exam Revision You exam will be on Tuesday 25 th January at 10am (at the moment – check the website for changes www.bolton.ac.uk/cet ) The exam is 2 hours long and contains 4 questions of which you must try and answer all of them It would also be useful to bring with you: –Pens maybe more than one colour –Pencils 2B/HB –A rule –An eraser

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Previous Exam paper 2003 Link online to last years exam Some questions are now irrelevant so not to worry about all the questions I have no idea about the first one, any thoughts would be excellent! Thought I would look at one or two and break them down

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Previous Exam paper 2003 Question 2: The use of colour in web design plays a major role in the mood, visual image and overall effect of the site being developed. Using the site provided in the attached printout demonstrate good use of colour in web design, explaining how colour has been used.

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Question 2 thoughts –The website provided may have been the BBC website but it does not really matter –It may be recommended to always have an example in mind for any issue.. –What might you discuss? –What areas do you feel are important? –What do you think might have secured the 25 marks?

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Colour issues Areas that might have been worth discussion: –Colour theory (contrasting, complementary) –The difference between RGB, CMYK and Index and explain which is most appropriate and why –Shape, tone and texture and their emotive qualities

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Colour issues Areas that might have been worth discussion: –White space and its use –Stock photography, branding and logo’s The marking scheme for this question would have been a mix of identification and clarification, in a question of this size it is important that you not only list the issues that are relevant but provide a useful description of them or explain your reasoning for listing it

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Colour issues 25 marks would have been distributed around: –Colour 2 –Shape 2 –Emotive language 2 –Texture 2 –Stock photography 2 –Branding 2 –logo’s 2 –White space 2 –RGB 3 –CMYK 3 –Index colour 3

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Question 4: Typography Identify which of the following fonts would be suitable for the applications listed below with reasons for their suitability. Comic Sans MS Arial Times New Roman Monotype Corsiva i. The body text of a financial institutions webpage ii. The headings and body text of a children’s website iii. A “printer friendly” version of a webpage

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Question 4: Typography In the typography example the mark is out of 6 and the same issues apply as before you need to isolate and explain. This should be a relatively simple question Each sub section is worth 2 marks and simply requires you to choose the correct one and give a reason A nice simple 6 marks hopefully!

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Question 5: Navigation Identify the four main methods of Navigation design –Worth 5 marks –Sometimes the marks are not specified and just depend on the clarity of your answer –The answer is: Top, text, left/right, bottom located navigation but obviously it would make sense to explain what you mean by them all to gain extra marks –TIP: keep the explanation simple for a lower value question and expand for larger marked problems

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Topics for 2005 exam?! Areas you need to brush up on: –Site mapping techniques –Understanding semiotics –Emotive languages in colour, shape and texture –Navigational issues –Golden section –Typography

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Sitemapping tips This is an area we have looked at but briefly (but in practicals mostly) Consider the problem and always think about inward and outward looking approaches, which works best and why Your maps must show paths of progression and should always allow the user to get home easily

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Semiotics This is a difficult topic as it depends on your own personal readings This is only a problem if you are not clear what YOU mean Understand the meaning and its history and you will be fine

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Emotive language Colour Shape Tone and Texture Again as it is personal interpretation be ready for a logical explanation of your interpretations

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Navigational issues This should be quite a logical topic and one I have provided you with good notes on Tips – think of live examples of all the standard types!

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Golden section This is a tricky one Understand its meaning and how it operates You may need to research this slightly outside of the notes for all the marks Try and apply it diagrammatically to some media?!

Copyright © 2005 Bolton Institute Typography This is both subjective and knowledge based Revise the anatomy Consider different type faces and their application
