18 Summary (Continued)  Concerns of Various State Social Studies Coordinators  Social Studies is not tested, making it difficult to make assumptions about social studies program of instruction.  Lack of social studies assessments is negatively impacting social studies education.  Schools are starting to commit all resources to areas assessed to meet annual yearly progress goals.  Social studies is becoming marginalized as a result of lack of funding.  Should social studies assessment continue on a statewide basis given its omission from No Child Left Behind?

19 Summary (Continued)  Possible Next Step  Determine exactly what geographic content is assessed on the various state assessments  What Needs to Be Followed  Pay close attention to the NCLB and state “highly qualified” teacher requirements. They seem to be changing frequently and could have a major impact on geography.  Pay close attention to social studies/geography testing in state assessments. 6 states have dropped social studies/geography from their state assessments in just 2 years (2002 -2004).
