MIPAS2D: nighttime-daytime CFC11 E. Arnone, M. Carlotti, E. Papandrea, M. Ridolfi DCFI, University of Bologna, Italy B.M. Dinelli ISAC-CNR, Bologna, Italy EuroSprite2005 ESRIN-ESA Frascati, 4 December 2008

EuroSprite2005 Night-daytime differences in CFC11 IMK Nighttime-daytime “daily” mean CFC11 within latitude band 60S/40S ACTION ITEM AI_L1_17.06 check Day/Night CFC-11 for the GMTR data ISSUE: day-nighttime difference in CFC11 of the order of 10% in IMK data (Stiller QWG17)

EuroSprite2005 MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in CFC11 Nighttime-daytime “daily” mean CFC11 within latitude band 60S/40S a) Left: Oxford b) Right:IMK

EuroSprite2005 MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in CFC11 Nighttime-daytime “daily” mean CFC11 within latitude band 60S/40S a) Left: MIPAS2D (about 5000 orbits)‏ b) Right:IMK Note that roughly the same colourbar is applied to the two figures.

MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in CFC11 Dec 2002 Jul 2003 Dec 2003 IMK night-daytime CFC11 2 -2 Temperature lat gradient (K/deg)‏ Dec 2002Jul 2003Dec 2003

The above analysis suggests that an inadequate modeling of the horizontal variability of temperature fields could explain the day-night differences observed in the IMK data as well as their reversal when changing season. Conclusions IMK MIPAS2D

Oxford day-nighttime CFC11 (left) and HNO3 (right). The opposite VMR vertical gradient induces a reversal of the day-nighttime difference. HNO3 issue

EuroSprite2005 MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in F11 MIPAS2D nighttime-daytime “daily” mean F11 in latitude bands a) Left:60S/40S (equivalent to Stiller's example)‏ b) Centre:40S/40N c) Right:40N/60N Results are obtained performing a weighted average, a 3-sigma clipping filtering and are then smoothed over a 3-day running box.

EuroSprite2005 MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in F11 MIPAS2D daytime F11 “daily” standard deviation in latitude bands a) Left:60S/40S (Stiller's example band)‏ b) Centre:40S/40N c) Right:40N/60N No significant difference with nighttime standard deviation (not shown).

EuroSprite2005 MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in F11 MIPAS2D daytime F11 “daily” mean ESD in latitude bands a) Left:60S/40S (Stiller's example band)‏ b) Centre:40S/40N c) Right:40N/60N No significant difference with nighttime mean ESD (not shown).

EuroSprite2005 MIPAS2D: night-daytime differences in F11 MIPAS2D number of daytime F11 measurements in latitude bands a) Left:60S/40S (Stiller's example band)‏ b) Centre:40S/40N c) Right:40N/60N No significant difference with number of nighttime measurements (not shown).
