2 What we know about great online teaching and learning in a nutshell Students and teachers must feel supported from beginning to end Consistent navigational structure among courses (redundancy) Clear and consistent course objectives and expectations from teacher at the beginning of the course Constructivist pedagogy thrives – students own their learning Students must be feel like they are connected to the teacher and each other – Multiple ways to access content and communicate with each other both formally and informally (BB, FB, Elluminate, SecondLIfe) – Good balance of synchronous & asynchronous learning activities

3 What we know about great online teaching and learning in a nutshell Content should be presented in diverse forms and have the ability to be shared/edited when appropriate Text Video/Audio Visual Diagrams Animations Assessment must be multi-dimensional Quizzes/Tests Research Projects with Peer Review (Group and Individual) Collaborative Presentations Journaling & Reflective Writing/Podcasting Participation in Discussions (synchronous and asynchronous) Single port of access to Real-time assistance and information on research, writing, technology, academic advising, registration, financial aid, etc. Clear policies regarding participation, grading and communication with teacher

Created by CEHS Advisory Committee on Hybrid/Online Teaching and Learning Adapted from Quality Matters rubric for evaluating online courses Rooted in pedagogy employed by CEHS faculty when teaching in face- to-face courses Driven by research of effective pedagogical practice in online classrooms over the past ten years

5 Current Process of Creating an Online/Hybrid Course in CEHS Evaluate online course for student learning Teach online course Test online course in multiple web browsers to insure operability of course content Register for appropriate faculty development workshop or schedule personal consultation with OIT Instructional Designer or ADP Center Staff to learn instructional technologies to be employed in online course (if needed) Once approved, collaborate through multiple review cycles with OIT/ADP Instructional Designer to create/migrate course content and structure Submit new or revised online course syllabus to Dept. Chair & Associate Dean Lucas for Review Schedule an appointment with OIT/ADP Instructional Designer to review/create course syllabus for online course (based on CEHS Guidelines) and generate course development plan and schedule Identify course to be offered online in collaboration with Dept. Chair
