What Is Cancer?

Cell cycle Regulation Cell Division is regulated by protiens in the cell called Cyclin. Cylcin tells the cell when to divide. Cells will stop growing and dividing when they come in contact with other cells. This helps stimulate healing when there is a wound. Other proteins help regulate cell division and make sure everything happens in the correct order External regulators such as hormones can tell a cell when it is time to divide

Cancer When cells divide uncontrollably Cancer cells do not respond to signals that control cell growth and division Caner is often linked to a damaged gene “p53” which detects the signals that control growth and division

Types of Cancer Cancer can affect almost any tissue type in the body. –Lung cancer –Skin Cancer –Liver Cancer –Breast Cancer –Cervical Cancer –Prostate Cancer

Causes of Cancer Just as there are many different types of cancer there are many different causes. Your Genetic make up can make you more or less susceptible to cancer. If you have a history of Cancer in your family you have a high risk of getting cancer.

Risk Factors Genetics Excessive exposure to Sun (Skin cancer) Exposure to Certain Viruses Inactivity and poor diet Exposure to Certain Chemicals or Compounds –Asbestos –Benzene (found in Gasoline and other fluids)

What can I do to Reduce my Risk of Cancer Exercise Eat Fresh Fruits and Veggies Limit Meats, smoked, Charred, Additives Don’t Smoke! Avoid too much sun, wear sunscreen, hat and long sleeves (Too much sun causes wrinkles too!) Limit exposure to chemicals Practice Safe sex or abstinence (HPV causes Cervical cancer) Know your body and get regular screenings
