UFCEKR-20-01 Media TechnologiesB.Sc Multimedia Computing Website Development Origins of the Internet The World Wide Web Establishing a Website Concept Design Creation Deployment Technical Issues

UFCEKR-20-01 Media TechnologiesB.Sc Multimedia Computing Origins of The Internet Established by the US Military in late 1950s as a response to the then perceived Russian (Soviet) technological advances e.g the launch of the first satellite (Sputnik). Evolved through 1960s - 1980s mainly by military and academic institutions (Universities). Emerged during mid 1990s within the domestic home market mainly through the new operating systems capabilities (Windows 95/98) and ease of hardware configuration. Late 90s Freeserve launched free Internet access (pay for calls - no monthly fee) gave way to general increase in takeup by the home user. Broadband rollout during earl;y part of new millennium further enlarges user base and leads to new forms of media delivery - music and video online e.g Apple iTunes etc. Future of Television seen by many to be associated with the Internet

UFCEKR-20-01 Media TechnologiesB.Sc Multimedia Computing The World Wide Web (WWW) The Internet is the physical network of Servers (dedicated computers), and other network devices (routers, hubs, cables etc.) that are interconnected across an international network hence (Internet). The World Wide Web is the (mesh) of millions of hyperlinked pages of text and data that resides on the Internet - it is an overlay of hyperlinks to data (information - hopefully). Concept of Hyperlinks connecting Internet pages first suggested and described by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. He now directs the World Wide Web Consortium, an open forum of companies and organizations with the mission to lead the Web to its full potential.

UFCEKR-20-01 Media TechnologiesB.Sc Multimedia Computing Whats in a Website What's in it? =Content What does it look like =Design How do you move around =Navigation Content - Ideas - what's it about? - focus, target audience Design - ‘look and feel’ GUI Design Navigation - Moving around the site Linear Interlinked

UFCEKR-20-01 Media TechnologiesB.Sc Multimedia Computing Web Development Cycle Planning & Design & gather content resources Author - Code & Fixup Publish - transfer files to a webserver Test - test the links and download times Debug fix missing links Republish Search Engine Registration User Evaluation Maintenance and Review

UFCEKR-20-01 Media TechnologiesB.Sc Multimedia Computing Standard & Conventions Give every page a title - helps some search engines reference the page Use underscore style for file names - my_web_files.html aLwAys uSE lowercase Organise folder structure for images and resources Homepage is always named index.html or index.htm User enters a URL in their browser location field Request is transmitted across the Internet to the corresponding webserver which hosts the website Webserver looks for a page called index.html or index.htm to send to the computer, if it can’t find the page it will only send a view of the websites home folder!

UFCEKR-20-01 Media TechnologiesB.Sc Multimedia Computing Hosting a Website Need a company to host (store) the pages associated with your site. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) often provide space for ‘user webpages’ eg. www.virgin.com/userspace/barrydean/ Some have subdomain ( where company name appended to username) e.g www.activemedia.flyer.co.uk - (Company name Flyer Internet) Most businesses usually register a ‘top level’ domain name and pay a webhosting company to host the site e.g www.argos.com www.sky.com

UFCEKR-20-01 Media TechnologiesB.Sc Multimedia Computing Registering a Domain Name.com,.net,.org,.co.uk,. uk.ltd.biz.com.net &.org still prized as best top level domain names most.com names gone or ‘drifting in cyberspace’ New domain extensions released to combat shortage.biz,.uk.com, etc. Academic domains (.ac) administered by UKERNA strictly controlled must ba publicly funded academic organisation to register.ac Some websites dedicated to providing domain registratio services and in links to the whois database www.register.com The whois database stores information about domain registrants, where the site is hosted and when the registration was last updated and when due for expiry.

UFCEKR-20-01 Media TechnologiesB.Sc Multimedia Computing Publishing a Website Publishing a website usually involves transferring files associated with the site to a remote server. The transfer takes place typically using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Logging on to the remote server using FTP client software and providing the following information: Host address of the remote server on the Internet e.g www.barrydean.net UserName Password In most this information is usually provided as part of setting up a site in Dreamweaver
