2 Legislation and teacher education First legislative act on the occupation title and qualification rights for compulsory school and upper secondary school teachers and for school administrators was passed in Iceland in 1986. In 1998 some changes, such as the teaching discipline has been written in the teacher’s licence from the Ministry of education, science and culture. 28.10.2011VÞE Guðjónsdóttir2

3 Legislation and teacher education Not thought of as a possible option to do the same thing with compulsory school teachers. The main rule until legislation act nr. 87/2008 was passed, had been: minimum requirement for compulsory school teachers, 3 years of study – with official final examination passed. For upper secondary school teachers, 3 years of study in teaching discipline(s) +1 year of study in pedagogy and didactics with official final examination. 4 Legislation and teacher education A new legislation about teacher education from 2008. The main innovation in the new legislation, is the minimum educational requirement for all teachers (kindergarten till upper sec.school, and for administrators in schools). Since June 2011 a masters degree or another university degree according to the Bologna agreement of 3 years of undergraduate and 2 years of postgraduate study. 28.10.2011VÞE Guðjónsdóttir4

5 Legislation and teacher education Regulation from 2009 states minimum requirements set for teachers in kindergarten, compulsory school and upper secondary school. The proportion between educational- and professional discipline in order to be entitled to the teaching licence from the ministry of education. 6 Compulsory school teachers 300 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). Compulsory: min. 120 ECTS in educational discipline, no less than 120 ECTS in the professional discipline. Optional courses no less than 60 units (1 year) for the degree, discipline or education is a personal choice. 28.10.2011VÞE Guðjónsdóttir6

7 Upper secondary school teachers 300 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System). Min of 60 ECTS in educational discipline, no less than 180 ECTS in main teaching subject and thereof should at least 60 ECTS be a part of a Masters Degree.
