10 Possible ways to become a teacher in Poland By completing the pre-service studies in 1st step only, or 2 in steps: Step I – 3 years long, at the bachelor level that provide competences for teaching 2 subjects in a primary school or in gymnasium. Step II – 2 years long, complementary at the master level that provide competences for teaching 1 subject at the post-gymnasium level (eg. in lyceum). By completing post- graduate studies in order to gain essential competences in a chosen subject or required pedagogic-psychological competences There exists a system of grants at the Ministry of Education supporting the professional development of teachers, e.g.: (1)Responding to the needs of reform (like teachers of science for the primary school – in the part) or (teachers of management for the upper secondary level - still currently) (2)By providing the competences in teaching an additional subject

11 Requirements on a Higher Education Institution to organize studies for teachers  The Teachers’ education standards must be held  The Higher Education Institution must provide graduate studies in each subject of interest (e.g. physics, chemistry etc.)  Teachers must study within dedicated courses (in the frame of adequate subject of studies)  The requirements are the same for both graduate and post-graduate studies The way the studies are organized depends on the Higher Education Institution.
