12 UKPDS 36 Summary There is a direct relationship between the risk of complications of diabetes and systolic blood pressure over time No threshold of systolic blood pressure was observed for a substantive change in risk for any of the clinical outcomes examined The lower the systolic blood pressure the lower the risk for complications There may be additional risk reduction with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and beta blockers over and above that associated with the lowering of blood pressure
