2 FNAL 21 September 2003 Mark Thomson, Cambridge 2 Background Cambridge:  Cambridge University is widely regarded* as the UK’s top University  Consists of 33 separate Colleges founded over the last 800 years  Cambridge University is relatively small town NE of London within 2 hours of all major airports (LHR,LGW,STN)  The town is dominated by the University Cambridge University: Wren Chapel (1666) as seen from the Porter’s Lodge  Located at very centre Cambridge  A number of historic buildings sited in large and very beautiful gardens Emmanuel College: * e.g. Sunday Times University Guide (The Sunday Times is like a UK version of the National Enquirer – just bigger)

3 FNAL 21 September 2003 Mark Thomson, Cambridge 3 Historic Connections Emmanuel College: The US Connection:  Founded 1583 by Sir Walter Mildmay (chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I) a man with Puritan sympathies  Of the first 100 university graduates that settled in the colonies of New England 1/3 were from Emmanuel  Cambridge, Massachusetts, was named after an Emmanuel preacher  Another Emmanuel man – John Harvard, gave his name to the 1 st US University* *nowadays visiting scholars from Harvard are given special rights – they are granted the opportunity to make a substantial donation to the college

4 FNAL 21 September 2003 Mark Thomson, Cambridge 4 Facilities  will take place in the Queen’s building  Excellent lecture theatre for about 120 people  Currently investigated installation of wireless LAN Plenary Sessions: Parallel Sessions:  Many other rooms available – but will need to book these soon Coffee/Chill out room: Registration Fee:  Coffee will be available in the Old Library (+wireless?)  Small registration fee (reduced rate for Grad. students) - estimate $25* *I have applied for a “Research Grant” to cover the costs of room hire for academic presentations “Committee Summaries” deprecated – the speakers may have to cover the additional costs.

5 FNAL 21 September 2003 Mark Thomson, Cambridge 5 Entertainment Program  Thursday 8 th (?) : Evening, graduate student tour of the highlights and (if desired) lowlife of Cambridge  Wednesday 7 th : Evening reception/ registration in the Old Library  Cambridge has many Pubs/Cafes/Bars/Restaurants - all located within easy walking distance of the centre of town Plus (provisional plans):  Friday 9 th : Collaboration Dinner in the Emmanuel Hall  For the brave/foolish – there is always one of the oldest outdoor swimming pools in the UK (weather permitting)

6 FNAL 21 September 2003 Mark Thomson, Cambridge 6 Practicalities  Web site up by the end of the week - I’ll email minos_all  Please register as soon as possible ! - I need a good estimate of numbers  Book Hotels early ! - the Undergraduate Hoard turns up on Saturday 10 th (many with parents in tow)  A list of hotels/B&Bs will go up on the web  Some “undergraduate-style” rooms (no en suite facilities, etc.) will be available (probably only for the intrepid graduate student)  I can promise that Cambridge is a beautiful and historic town which is easy to explore on foot BUT in January I can’t guarantee the weather !
