Meet “The Man” “ The Man” is bad.

How “The Man” is bad: Makes us pay too much for books Pays us too little for the books we want to sell back Makes us wait in line to do either task He wastes our time and money!!!

The Book Exchange for SIMS Students (BESS)… …an easy way to fight “The Man”

BESS Goals: Save SIMS students money and time in the textbook buying process Help students make the most money from selling their books Build community among SIMS students

System Description Needs assessment indicated that students wanted a more accurate and less-annoying way to buy and sell books than mass emailing. Based on needs assessment, we decided BESS does not require the functionality of an e- commerce site. However, it needs to be more than a “books for sale” message board. System is modeled on the best features of Craig’s List, CourseBook.com, and Half.com.

Persona 1: Sarah McClintock: First year at SIMS Lives in Oakland, takes the bus or rides her bike Has an old beagle (100 in human years) Frequently buys books from the Web

Persona #1, cont. Sarah wants: To buy books as cheaply as possible To compare as many options as possible To meet more SIMS students To see the books for other classes that she might take later Sarah doesn’t want: To irritate peers by asking everyone for used books To get ripped off by the bookstores

Persona #2: Yvonne Mallory-Carter Second-year SIMS student, about to graduate Parents are fussy yuppies; grew up in Saratoga Job offer from Yahoo as usability expert Also works 30 hours a week at a Web design firm Always goes to Thirsty Thursday and spends a lot of time at SIMS Secret shame: addicted to Dawson’s Creek and Buffy

Persona #2 Yvonne wants: To sell all books not related to interface design and usability To sell books quickly Wants to bequeath her used books to fellow SIMS students Yvonne doesn’t want: To haggle to get the top price To lug unnecessary books to her new condo in Mountain View

Main Scenarios for BESS Sarah: Buy GUI Bloopers and sell Modern Information Retrieval. Sarah: Use BESS to compare the available prices of GUI Bloopers. Once she’s found the two lowest prices, contact the sellers through BESS and try to bargain the price down. Yvonne: Use BESS to post the books Understanding Networked Applications, Usability Engineering, and The Handbook of Usability Testing for sale.

Low-fi Prototype

Test Results Problem 1: Business Model Users were confused about what BESS was– an e-commerce site? an auction site? Design changes: Revise the site’s language to better reflect the site’s purpose. We’re also looking for a new name.

Test Results, cont. Problem 2: Users had trouble navigating through the site, especially between the four main functions of the site. Navigation options weren’t consistently visible. Design Change: Change top navigation bar to tabbed navigation, visible all the time.

Test Results, con’t. Problem 3: Users showed some behavior we didn’t expect! Two out of three users tried to use the system to bargain. Design Change: Modify the interface so that it supports bargaining behavior (contacting multiple sellers simultaneously).

BESS Demo

Lessons Learned Vocabulary control and information design must be correspond with the interface’s purpose. Difference between what users want and what they tell us they want. ColdFusion and Dreamweaver templates Difficulty managing UI design once technology has been implemented. Paper is good!
