 Fact Fluency is the ability to recall BASIC addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts quickly with little to no thinking about strategies.  Fact Fluency is the foundation of computation mastery which then supports our students in becoming more flexible and confident in problem solving.  Fact Fluency should be incorporated each and every day into student work at home. Just as students need to practice reading to become better readers, students need to practice fact fluency to become stronger mathematicians.  Fact Fluency over the summer…. Flash card practice (store bought or parent/student made), apps and games on computer or ipad, in the car, out the door, sitting at the pool, waiting in line, etc. EASY!! Practice every day!!

 We encourage our students to do their best to show what they know... but we also do our best to alleviate stress and worrying. We de-emphasize getting a high score; rather, we encourage personal best.  We tell our students: care about the test, but don’t worry about it!  You know, and WE know, that your child is so much more than a test score. We have seen growth in so many areas this year, and we let students know that. Please remind your child often of their strengths and accomplishments!

 While your child is doing homework, pay attention to the concepts that he or she is learning. Use these concepts in general conversation- or weave them in as they apply. Ex: 4th grade fractions- ask what fraction of a pizza your child ate for dinner.  We have found that excessive "studying" for this kind of test can cause undo stress!

 The night before: Let it be a normal evening...But make sure your child gets enough sleep! 10-12 hours. Also try to limit other stressful situations.  The morning of: Again, a normal morning… but wake up in time for there to be as little chaos as possible. Breakfast should include protein and carbs- try to cut out sugar! Your child needs slow burning fuel.

We need proctors! Test Dates: May 19, 20, 27 Training Dates: May 1 st at 10:00a.m OR May 5 th at 9:30a.m. clehew@wcpss.net

 We will post this presentation on our school’s website and the “Parent Portal” website that you saw tonight.
