Report from JMA 16th GSICS Executive Panel, Boulder, 15-16 May 2015 Kotaro Bessho and Masaya Takahashi (Meteorological Satellite Center, Japan Meteoroogical Agency)

Agency update – Himawari-8: launched on 7 Oct. 2015 Operation start: July 2015, 7 years operation – MTSAT-2 will be backup operation mode of Himawari-8 in July 2015 – MTSAT-1R re-orbit: in December 2015 – Himawari-9 launch: planned in 2016 GSICS-EP-16, Boulder, 15-16 May 2015 2005200620072008200920102011201220132014201520162017201820192020202120222023202420252026202720282029 MTSAT-1R Meteorological Mission MTSAT-2 Meteorological Mission Himawari-8 Himawari-9 In-orbit standbyOperational In-orbit standby Manufacturing Launch In-orbit standby Launch Operational In-orbit standby

Participation in EP, GDWG, GRWG Points of contacts/meeting participants: – EP: Kotaro Bessho – GDWG: Masaya Takahashi (co-chair) – GRWG: Arata Okuyama, Masaya Takahashi, Hidehiko Murata, Ryoko Yoshino Main contribution to GDWG actions – Updates of GSICS product template (e.g. GSICS Prime Correction of GEO-LEO-IR) – Implementation of the netCDF GSICS product checker on Java (CMA/IMD/JMA/KMA collaboration) with a great support by EUMETSAT – Conversion of each instrument’s official SRF to netCDF for GSICS standard SRF dataset, in collaboration with EUMETSAT Main contribution to GRWG actions – Investigate and provide a report on the GEO-LEO-IR uncertainty analysis especially for the products w.r.t. AIRS/CrIS to support progress to Pre-Operational mode Other action – JMA and JAXA to investigate the possibility to organise the next GRWG/GDWG annual meeting Under discussion with JAXA GSICS-EP-16, Boulder, 15-16 May 2015

Current and prospective GSICS Products ProductStatusComments GEO-LEO- IR (MTSAT)Demonstration Uncertainty evaluation has been almost finished In preparation for GPPA submission GEO-LEO-IR (Himawari-8)In developmentWill be submitted to the GPPA ASAP GEO-LEO-VISNIR (MTSAT, Himawari-8) In development DCC and lunar calibration, in collaboration with GPRCs GSICS-EP-16, Boulder, 15-16 May 2015

Highlights of JMA calibration activities 1) Uncertainty evaluation of MTSAT-2 vs. IASI/AIRS GSICS Correction GSICS-EP-16, Boulder, 15-16 May 2015 Systematic uncertainty of TB MTSAT-2 IR GSICS Correction: currently in Demonstration Phase Uncertainty analysis based on Hewison (2013) vs. AIRS product -Spectral mismatch is dominant vs. IASI product -Good agreement w/ Hewison (2013) Preparation for Pre- operational Phase: ongoing

Highlights of JMA calibration activities 2) Himawari-8/AHI ray-matching with S-NPP/VIIRS AHI B01 (0.47μm) vs VIIRS M03 AHI B02 (0.51μm) vs VIIRS M03 AHI B03 (0.64μm) vs VIIRS I01 AHI B04 (0.86μm) vs VIIRS M07 AHI B05 (1.6μm) vs VIIRS M10 AHI B06 (2.3μm) vs VIIRS M11 AHI radiance VIIRS radiance AHI radiance VIIRS radiance AHI radiance Blue: regression line Red: regression after SRF difference correction between AHI and VIIRS2 Apr. 2015  Bands #3 (0.64μm) and #5 (1.6 μm) show 5 to 10 % discrepancy  Roughly consistent with vicarious calibration using RT simulation

User Requirements and Feedback about GSICS deliverables Satellite data users – L2 retrieval such as SST Diurnal calibration variation (e.g. MTSAT-2) should be corrected As a satellite operator – Calibration event logging DB can be very useful for JMA because we have been maintaining them on paper-basis GSICS-EP-16, Boulder, 15-16 May 2015 Diurnal variation of TB biases derived from GEO-LEO IR collocation data ΔTB [K] 10.8 [μm] 12.0 [μm] MTSAT-2 against Metop-A/IASI Aqua/AIRS
