Report from JMA 17th GSICS Executive Panel, Biot, 2-3 June 2016 Masaya Takahashi on behalf of Kazumi Kamide Meteorological Satellite Center, Japan Meteorological Agency GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 20161

JMA update Overall satellite planning/status – Himawari-8: became operational on 7 July 2015 – MTSAT-2: backup mode of Himawari-8 – MTSAT-1R: re-orbit in December 2015 – Himawari-9: to be launched in 2016 GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 20162

Participation in EP, GDWG, GRWG GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 20163 Points of contacts – EP: Kazumi Kamide (new) – GDWG: Masaya Takahashi (co-chair) – GRWG: Arata Okuyama, Masaya Takahashi, Hidehiko Murata Main contribution to GDWG actions – Updates of GSICS product template (e.g. GSICS Prime Correction of GEO-LEO-IR, GEO-LEO-VNIR) – Sharing calibration landing page within GDWG as one of the templates – Conversion of each instrument’s official SRF to netCDF for lunar calibration Main contribution to GRWG actions – Feasibility study for DCC inter-calibration for all VIS/NIR bands – AHI lunar calibration using GIRO (ongoing) – Uncertainty evaluation of AHI GEO-LEO-IR (ongoing)

Current and prospective GSICS Products GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 20164 ProductStatusComments GEO-LEO-IR (Himawari-8)In developmentWill be submitted to the GPPA ASAP GEO-LEO- IR (MTSAT)Demonstration Uncertainty evaluation has been almost finished In preparation for GPPA submission GEO-LEO-VNIR (MTSAT, Himawari-8) In developmentBased on NASA DCC algorithm Himawari-8 GEO-LEO-IR: to be directly submitted to Pre- Operational Phase because – JMA has experience of implementation of the same algorithm (MTSAT GEO-LEO-IR) – Uncertainty evaluation would be no problem – Numbers of external users reviewing might be a problem

Highlights of JMA calibration activities 1) Himawari-8/AHI VIS/NIR calibration GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 20165 Calibration slope: updated in June 2015 based on solar diffuser observation Accuracy was improved, but +/- 4-6% biases still remain in band 5 (1.6μm) / 6 (2.3μm) Band 1 (0.47μm) Band 2 (0.51μm) Band 3 (0.64μm) Band 4 (0.86μm) Band 5 (1.6μm) Band 6 (2.3μm) Update of calibration slopes AHI Calibration information on JMA website: http://www.data.jma.go.jp/mscweb/en/operation/calibration_portal.html

Highlights of JMA calibration activities 2) Himawari-8/AHI IR calibration GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 20166 Reference sensors: Metop-A/IASI Metop-B/IASI Aqua/AIRS S-NPP/CrIS Monthly statistics in February 2016 No significant diurnal variation in Himawari-8 Small variation in Himawari-8: under investigation

Feedback on GSICS deliverables (in response to Action EP-16.10) GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 20167 Satellite data users – SST retrieval Impact study of AHI GEO-LEO-IR at 2016 GSICS annual meeting by JAXA Small (~0.2K at standard scene) and stable TB biases, but some positive impacts For the consistency of satellite SSTs among GEO and LEO sensors, importance of LEO- LEO GSICS Corrections was commented -> recommendation to GRWG – SCOPE-CM activities Inter-calibration methods: useful for IOGEO (Inter-cal of GEO imagers) project Re-processed GEO L1 data: to be usesd for re-processing of AMV, CSR / land surface albedo projects As a satellite operator – Real-time alerting system based on GEO-GEO comparison approach Comparison of imagery with previous full-disk observing cycle (10 minutes before) Useful not only for satellite operators but also for Cal/INR developers to check the ground processing changes Designed for internal use, but might be available online in future
