What is a Delegate? What is a Trustee? Explain your response. A Delegate is “One who acts on behalf of another” A Trustee is “One to whom something is trusted” BW:  What is a delegate?  What is a trustee? Webster's defines it as:  one acting on behalf of another vs. one to whom something is trusted. Have students brainstorm common examples they can relate to:  getting groceries off of a list, driving someone home, etc.Maybe have them think about student government?  How could these terms apply to Congress?What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

3 More Bell work… Brainstorm examples of a trustee and delegate in real life. Explain your reasoning. Think about CFHS’s student government. Are they more “delegate” or “trustee”? Why? How could these terms apply to Congress? What are the advantages/disadvantages of each (Trustee vs Delegate)? Read the handout “Who Is The Boss? Trustee Model vs. Delegate Model of Representation” 2. While reading the handout, highlight each paragraph for the MAIN IDEA. 3. Write 2 summary statements that include the definitions and the positive and negative features for: Trustee Model Delegate Model

In a group of 4 students, refer to the James Madison Quotes For each quote, decide if it fits the Trustee or Delegate model. Explain your reasoning. Answer the summarizer question at the end. Be prepared to discuss your answers. Do a modified Take a Stand activity to see how groups classified Madison’s quotes

10 Which issues demand more of a trustee than a delegate or vice versa?
In the same group, look over the Enumerated powers of Congress. Pick 5 powers Fill out the T- Chart, deciding which of the 5 powers are more Trustee or more Delegate. Explain your reasoning. Look at the list of issues currently affecting America. Pick 5 issues. Discuss with your group if they are more Trustee or Delegate and place in your T-chart. Explain your reasoning. War, Taxes, Civil Rights, etc. Have groups share their responses

11 Sharing of Powers and Issues
Your group will pick 2 Powers of Congress AND 2 issues affecting America from your T-chart to share with the class. Have one member of your group write this information on the class T-chart Be prepared to share your answer and reasoning

What is SB 1070? Discuss with your partner. Watch video about Raul Grijalva and proposed boycott In calling for this boycott, do you think that Grijalva is acting more as a Trustee or a Delegate? Explain your reasoning. Start video at 2:09; 3:25

14 SB 1070 Demographics Arizona Republic Poll:
80% of Republicans support SB 1070 58% of Democrats oppose SB 1070 and only 38% of Democrats support the new law. 36% of people age 18 to 34 support SB 1070, while 52% oppose it. People 35 to 54 favor SB 1070 by a margin of 64% for and 26% against. People over 55 favor SB 1070 by a margin of 63% for and 31% against. An interesting poll reported in the Arizona Republic Sunday July 25th While overall Arizonans support SB 1070, the amount of support or opposition depends on political identity, ethnicity, income  and age.

Watch video… Why do you think that Grijalva is now calling for an end to the boycott of Arizona, that was started in reaction to SB 1070? Explain your reasoning. ; video is from august 2 2:50 to 3:30 discuss what the reasons were that led to calling off the boycott (interest group pressure, constituent pressure, desire to be re-elected, etc.
