New England Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island CLIMATE: – Bitter, cold winters – Mild summers – Rocky soil—made farming difficult RELIGION: – Puritans (Goal to “purify” Christianity) Followed strict rules and were intolerant of other religions Life was dominated by the church – Punishments – Not able to celebrate holidays ECONOMY: – Dependent on the ocean Fishing, shipbuilding, and logging Traded rum for slaves from West Africa

Middle Colonies New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware CLIMATE/GEOGRAPHY: – Cold winters, warm summers – All states were similar to NC in geography – Ideal for agriculture Known as the “breadbasket” because of the large amounts of barley, wheat, oats, and rye RELIGION – No single religion Quakers, Catholics, Jews, Lutherans and Presbyterians ECONOMY – Logging, shipbuilding, textiles production, and papermaking – Heavily dependent on agriculture – Big cities had craftsmen such as blacksmiths, silversmiths, and cobblers

6. Southern Colonies Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia CLIMATE: – Hot summers, mild winters – Perfect for farming – Hot summers caused the spread of disease Yellow fever and malaria RELIGION: – Anglican (Baptist or Presbyterian) – Spread out so religion was not as much a part of their lifestyle ECONOMY: – Rice, indigo, tobacco, sugarcane, and cotton were cash crops.
