15 Developmental Education at UTRGV
We understand that not all students admitted to UTRGV will be college ready in all areas when they join our family. But we're confident that with a little extra support, all of our students can be prepared to begin their studies this fall. To that end, we've designed a pathway which we're very excited about which will help these students get started early on their track to success at UTRGV. The key component of this pathway is our new summer bridge program, called JumpStart.

16 Jumpstart: Summer Bridge Program
Required for all entering students (with fewer than 30 hours in a college setting) who are not college ready in reading, writing, and/or math Must complete the program to enroll in coursework in Fall 2015 Offered during the Summer II session (July 15-Aug 20) Will be offered on both Edinburg and Brownsville campuses Limited tuition/fee, residence hall, and dining scholarships available Financial Aid: Apply for FAFSA New first year students who aren't college ready in reading, writing, and/or math will be required to attend and finish the summer bridge program, which will be offered in Edinburg and Brownsville during the summer II session this year. They must complete the program to enroll in coursework in Fall We will have a limited number of tuition, residence hall, and dining scholarships available for students who need help covering the costs of the program.

17 Jumpstart: Summer Bridge Program
Embedded tutors and peer mentors Reading & writing are integrated into one course Math pathways Algebra path for STEM majors Statistics path for non-STEM majors Online sections available

18 What happens if a student can’t attend Jumpstart or doesn’t pass it?
Appeals process (deadline is July 3) Co-requisite developmental course paired with credit- bearing course offered in Fall & Spring There will be an appeals process for those who cannot attend the bridge or can't finish. If students finish the summer bridge, but still aren't quite college ready, they will be allowed to enroll in coursework in the fall, but they will be required to take a co-requisite model for developmental education which pairs an online developmental course with a credit-bearing course in the same area.

19 High Quality Developmental Education
Curriculum designed and delivered by top-notch faculty Based on proven innovative approaches to developmental education We believe the vast majority of students will become college ready through the summer bridge. Important things I want you to know about our support for developmental students: -the curriculum is being designed and delivered by top-notch faculty with a great deal of experience with innovative approaches to developmental education.  -We have a long history of offering high quality developmental education in Edinburg, and we are confident that we will be able to help the vast majority of students become college ready through the summer bridge. Thomas's comment yesterday about students who do the bridge likely being able to do better than their peers in ENG 1301 in the fall.

20 Summary: Developmental Education @ UTRGV
Students who are admitted to UTRGV, but are not college ready in one or more area will be allowed to enroll in coursework at UTRGV if they follow the required pathway. Summer II Jumpstart program They do not have to enroll at a local community college unless they choose to do so. UTRGV is committed to providing the necessary support so all of our students can be successful.
