1 MUSICALS! Objectives: to define the types of musicals To become familiar with various musicals by creating a timeline of shows Bell Work: ON MY TEACHER PAGE, download “INTRO to Musical Theater” and answer the questions above the dotted line.

2 Vocabulary Musical: a play where the characters sing songs to help tell the story Opera: a play set entirely (usually) to music Operetta: a short opera, usually on a light or humorous theme and typically having spoken dialogue. Notable composers of operettas include Offenbach, Johann Strauss, Lehár, and Gilbert and Sullivan. Classic vs. Modern Musical: story lines and musical styles help differentiate between classic and modern musicals (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Oklahoma!, Fiddler on the Roof are classics, while Phantom of the Opera, RENT, and Shrek are modern)

4 Assignment Create a creative timeline of various musicals from 1900 – 2015; include at least 24 different shows; one for each decade is a minimum requirement Determine the type of musical: opera, operetta, classic, modern (you may have to watch some to determine style) Include a song from the show you find interesting Due: Friday
