1 Warm-Up 1 In his book, The Spirit of Laws (1748), French philosopher Baron de Montesquieu wrote of a “tripartite system” of government in which the powers of government are separated and assigned to different bodies. How are Montesquieu’s ideas applied in the U.S. Constitution? A three levels of government (local, state, and federal) B three levels of the judiciary (district, appellate, and supreme courts) C three civil protections (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness) D three branches of government (legislative, executive, and judicial) 2 Which would be the most effective argument Anti-Federalists might have used to justify their position during ratification debates? 4 Foldable On your provided sheet of paper fold in at the ends so that you have two outer flaps and a larger center section. The left side will be “Sources of Law” The middle will be “The American Legal System” Have two sections under the larger heading as Rights and Responsibilities. The Right will be “Types of Laws”

5 Foldable Read through chapter 15 and complete the foldable by putting in the main ideas, key terms, and supporting facts for each topic. Write neatly, and draw a picture on the outside of the closed foldable that represents the Legal System.

Sets of Rules that allow people to live together. What should they do? To keep the peace and prevent violence. What makes a Law a Good Law? It is fair and people will be treated equally They are reasonable. They must be understandable.

Seek to prevent people from deliberately or recklessly harming one another or one another’s property. Include: Felonies, Misdemeaners, Larceny, Robbery, and Burglary. Civil Law Disputes between people or groups in which no criminal laws have been broken. Ex. Lawsuits, Torts, Family Law. Constitutional Law Deals with interpretation of the Constitution. Administrative Law – Rules and Regulations Statutory Law – Speed limits, food inspection, Social Security, drivers licenses, etc. International Law

9 Rights and Responsibilities
Ch. 15, Sec. 3 Go through the section and complete the foldable, finish fill in all of the sections and then turn it in for a grade. All information is found in Chapter 15. When finished with the foldable, analyze the political cartoon on pg. 437 in the book. Explain what the cartoon means.
