2 Final Assignment Reminder Due Dec 13th by 5:00pm For your final assignment you need to reflect on your science teaching in a way that reveals your growth as a science teacher this semester and that shows others what you care about. Head on over to the wiki: Assignments.Assignments school

3 Synthesis Activity: Bringing together 5 big themes What should students learn: Learning goals How should students learn it: The I-AIM approach How do students learn: Students’ science toolkits (science conceptions, funds of knowledge, special needs) Making science real and making time for science: Integration Critical and reflective teachers: Thinking hard, working on behalf of your students, and taking a stand.

4 Synthesis Activity #1 Team 1: Learning Goals: What are they and why do we care? Team 2: Students Science Toolkits: Whats in them and how do they matter? Team 3: Core strategies for eliciting students toolkits: The best of the best ideas! Team 4: The Instructional Sequence: I-AIM Team 5: Integration: Keeping science in the big picture Team 6: Taking a stance and making a difference

5 Generate a FAQs page on your big idea. To do this, follow the following steps : Step 1: Define your big Generate a list of bullet points that you think captures what the big idea means. Do so in a way that speaks to teachers! Step 2: Generate a list of questions that you may still have or that others may have on your big idea. Write out those questions and short answers to them. Step 3. Expand and refine your list/response with powerful examples! Use the resources available on the wiki, the NSTA book, your notes and minds. Use key terms, reference important chapters, readings or websites, and come up with powerful examples from your field placement, your own experiences or TE 401.

6 I’ve started each page for you to help. Now you do the rest! The questions that you ask and the answers that you give should reflect your knowledge, ideas and practices you developed this semester! Do this all on the designated wiki page! It will be there for you next year in your internship (and hey, maybe I will be your 804 teacher!), and possibly for future 401 students, with your permission. I suspect that once you are all done, we will find common linkages among your pages and I can go in and put the hyperlinks in there for you. This is a great way to demonstrate your thinking and tie your work together for the semester.

7 Synthesis Activity #2 In this case you will learn about Jana, a fifth grader, who attended an after school program called GET City during the 2008-2009 school year. Your challenge in this case is to explore Jana’s toolkit for learning about green energy. Key questions: – What does she seem to be interested in? Why? – How do the social, political and cultural contexts in which she lives inform what she knows and cares about? – How does Jana leverage her knowledge and interests to engage with the green energy focus of GET City?

8 Next steps Getting to know Jana Taking a look at the Key Science Standards Timeline of Jana’s involvement Work in teams of 3 people to go through the case and reflect on the questions. When you finish the case we will discuss the key questions and discuss what this case means for teaching science.

Once you have completed the table, then return to the I-AIM table and generate a list of questions and ideas that you help focus on this sort of stuff for the different stages of planning.

The supply of many natural resources is limited. Humans have devised methods for extending their use of natural resources through recycling, reuse, and renewal. K-7 Standard E.ES. Using scientific tools and practices to understand how human interaction and use of natural resources affects the environment.
