4 Lisbon Treaty: an 8-year process 2004: Constitutional Treaty signed in Rome 2005: French and Dutch voters reject the Constitutional Treaty 2007: Lisbon Treaty signed 2008: Irish voters reject the Lisbon Treaty 2009: Irish voters accept the Lisbon Treaty, and Czech Republic is the last country to ratify it

5 What does Lisbon Treaty do? Amends the EU and EC treaties Simplifies working methods and voting rules Modifies institutions: new posts created Charter of Fundamental Rights becomes European primary law Gives the EU a single legal personality Increases EU influence on security and justice
