1 WG3 Action FP0903 WG3 Climate Change and Forest Mitigation and Adaptation in a Polluted Environment [MAFor] WG3 Protocols and supersites Prague meeting 14-16 th June 2011 Dr Teis Nørgaard Mikkelsen Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy Technical University of Denmark DK-4000 Roskilde E-mail: temi@risoe.dtu.dktemi@risoe.dtu.dk

2 WG3 Protocols and supersites  Monitoring sites  Specific requirements  Measurement techniques  Instrumentation  Maintenance  Procedures for calibration  Data processing  Storage - will be standardised, based on the WG1 and WG2 results. This work will be done at WG3 meetings and eventually by expert workshops and other meetings. WG3 Action FP0903 WG3 From MOU FP0903 document 11. June 2009

Mikkelsen, Michael Mirtl, Yasemin Öztürk, Dario Papale, Nenad Potocic, David Simpson, Juha-Pekka Tuovinen, Timo Vesala, Gerhard Wieser, Elena Paoletti In this article, representatives from major European networks recommend a system of supersites for forest monitoring and research in Europe, based on a reasonable number of highly instrumented “supersites” and a larger number of intensive monitoring plots linked to these. The system needs to be based on existing infrastructures but requires more coordination, harmonisation and a joint long term platform.

6 WG3 Action FP0903 WG3 Prague meeting 14-16 th June 2011 MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING - deliverables for WG3 1. Assessment of representativeness of existing sites for the installation of Supersites III 2. Recommendations and key priorities for geographical optimisation of Supersites III; 3. Documentation of criteria and protocols for monitoring site selection, measurements, data processing, storage and diffusion; 4. Guidelines of work at Supersites III, from management to data and result circulation, with focus on data storage; Fischer et al. iForest 2011 Matyssek et al. EP 2011
