7 Concept Statement To create an identifiable brand for student study spaces throughout the University of Minnesota’s campus with an environmentally friendly focus. The spaces will draw inspiration from natural materials and forms. Organic lines will be used to create architectural focal points within the spaces and will also be repeated throughout the contemporary furniture and accents. A natural, earth-toned palette will be infused into the spaces through the use of rich browns, tans and greens. Accents of brighter purple tones will be used to add interest and energy into the space, creating an ideal environment for relaxing and studying. The materials used within the spaces will be natural, eco-friendly materials that promote sustainability. The variety of textures, both visual and tactile, will be used to create casual and comforting spaces where students can utilize separate areas according to their needs. All of these elements will combine to create a harmonious space that balances contemporary design, along with natural materials and organic forms that mimic nature. The end result will be identifiable, functional and sustainable spaces for the University of Minnesota students to enjoy while they spend time studying.

17 How the Spaces Relate The space will be recognizable by the repetition of the casual and environmentally friendly types of furnishings and finishes within the space, the repetition of the same earthy color palette and the ambiance that all the these elements combined create.

18 Three Key Solutions to Take Away From Our Design Sustainability – Majority of materials will be environmentally friendly and made from rapidly renewable or recycled materials Functionality – The spaces will now better serve the students who use them and have different types of spaces that are somewhat separated depending on what type of work a student needs to do, individual studying, group work, relaxing, or eating Identifiable – All the spaces will have a similar atmosphere that is very casual, relaxed and inviting to students. It will be a space where students walking by will want to enter and studying in because everyone will be able to find their own personal space to work in
