2 Why this project? Topography, climate, seismic characteristics produce regular: – Earthquakes – Floods, droughts – Landslides – Heavy snows Problems aggravated by: – Mining – Deforestation

3 Project overview Goals: – Strengthen national, local capacities for natural disaster risk management – Promote environmental sustainability, social stability Time Frame: 2006-2007 (18 months) – Implementation now starting Partners: – Ministries of Emergencies, Nature Protection – Oblast ’ governments in Osh, Djalalabad, Sughd – UNDP, OSCE, UNEP, NATO Funding: $450K – UNDP: $350K – CIDA: $100K

4 Project components Vulnerability, capacity assessments – Risk assessment mapping: research of existing studies, analysis of local risk management capacity Local pilot projects – Capacity building for local governments, communities Three regional training courses – Emphasis on community participation Awareness raising on disaster risk management – Use of CARnet web portal (www.caresd.net)www.caresd.net
