RiceLeaders Team Members Janet Braam, Professor of Biochemistry & Cell Biology Sean Ferguson, Jones School, Director MBA Program Kamran Khan, Vice Provost for Information Technology Sara Lowman, Director/Interim University Librarian Jennifer West, Professor/Director Inst. Bioscience/Eng Sponsor(s): Provost Gene Levy and Kevin Kirby

The Rice Leaders Mandate Overcome activation energy barriers to enable faculty to collaborate with TMC institutions. Address five problems that can be addressed in the next 6 months Deliverables & Milestones Rice: Engineering, Natural Sciences, Administration TMC: Baylor, Methodist, UT Health Sciences, MD Anderson Coordination Intellectual policy Administrative processes Parking & transportation TMC point of view Considerations

Information Gathering Rice: – Jordan Konisky, Vice Provost of Research – Nancy Nisbett, Director of Office of Sponsored Research – Kathleen Matthews, Dean of Natural Sciences – Sallie Keller-McNulty, Dean of Engineering – Faculty members and Students – Karen Ethun, Gulf Coast Consortium – Eugene Radelescu Transportation Office – Bill Lee, Associate Dean of Executive Education Program – Provost Gene Levy – Diana Randall, Program Director of CRC – James Faubion, Chair of Anthropology TMC – Leonard Zwelling, VP Research Admin., MD Anderson – Jim Patrick, Vice President Research, BCM – Sue Berget, Vice President and Vice Dean of Academic Planning, BCM – Peter Davies, Executive VP Research, UTHSC

Communication & Awareness Few incentives for collaboration Faculty need to be more aware of potential collaborators Few opportunities for informal networking Issues Seed grants - incentives for Rice faculty to find TMC colleagues Recommendations Incentives and opportunities will drive collaborations

Communications & Awareness Issues Seed grants - incentives for Rice faculty to find TMC colleagues Semi annual symposia Web Portal/Intranet Place of gathering for social interactions (CRC Pub) Work with GCC (awareness enhancement mechanisms in place) Work with Rice Public Relations Office More joint appointments Recommendations Incentives and opportunities will drive collaborations Few incentives for collaboration Faculty need to be more aware of potential collaborators Few opportunities for informal networking

Parking and Transportation Parking is inconvenient and expensive Inefficient transportation mechanism Issues Parking – Reimburse parking charges – Provide parking vouchers or pass Recommendations Parking relief will lower frustration/cost/time

Parking and Transportation Issues Parking – Reimburse parking charges – Provide parking vouchers or pass More convenient shuttle service – Schedule shuttle around key seminars – Extend route on campus Explore pedestrian access Recommendations Parking relief will lower frustration/cost/time Parking is inconvenient and expensive Inefficient transportation mechanism

Grants Coordination Research is being delayed Frustration impeding collaboration at both Rice and TMC Issues Universal agreement for sub contracts – It can be done: GCC agreement formed by 6 presidents Recommendations A streamlined grant process will ease collaboration

Grants Coordination Research is being delayed Frustration impeding collaboration at both Rice and TMC Issues Universal agreement for sub contracts – It can be done: GCC agreement formed by 6 presidents Enhance relationships among sponsored research and sponsored projects staff Management consultant to review alignment of processes Recommendations A streamlined grant process will ease collaboration

IRBs/IACUC Agreements Research is being delayed due to repetitive cycling by IRB/IACUC approvals Faculty frustrations are high Issues Contract with collaborating institutions – the TMC institution to be the IRB/IACUC of record Office of Sponsored Research review the processes Recommendations Organizational understanding and process can benefit Rice-TMC

Barriers to Core Research Facilities Rice core infrastructure is limited Substantial resources exist at TMC but not easily assessed Ongoing collaboration can face restricted access to data and experimental materials Issues Gain access to TMC facilities as fee for service Recommendations Research productivity will increase with infrastructure

Barriers to Core Research Facilities Rice core infrastructure is limited Substantial resources exist at TMC but not easily assessed Ongoing collaboration can face restricted access to data and experimental materials Issues Gain access to TMC facilities as fee for service Global coordination effort for core research facilities within TMC Gain access to medical library (pay for membership in TMC library) Provide access to data sets and computational resources Recommendations Research productivity will increase with infrastructure

Facilitating Student Interactions Rice undergraduates are minimally capitalizing on TMC research opportunities Issues Create program with clear web advertising to encourage Rice undergraduate students to participate in research at TMC Recommendations Rice students can benefit greatly through the TMC resource

Facilitating Student Interactions Rice undergraduates are minimally capitalizing on TMC research opportunities Students are able to take TMC courses but course information does not appear on Rice transcript Rice students at TMC face difficulties in financial arrangements, and supervision policies are unclear Issues Create program with clear web advertising to encourage Rice undergraduate students to participate in research at TMC Coordination from institutional CFO’s to address issues for Rice graduate students working for TMC Develop policies for student supervision Coordinate registrar procedures Recommendations Rice students can benefit greatly through the TMC resource

Recommendations To facilitate continued attention include Rice/TMC interactions as a goal for the new Vice Provost for Research Crosscutting Recommendation Parking Vouchers Seed Funding TMC IRB/IACUC of Record Integrate Undergrad Research Access to Core Facilities
