NARA’s High Capacity Magnetic Media Study Michael R. Carlson Director Electronic and Special Media Records Services Division IASSIST Annual Conference June 14, 2002

Function Overview l Accessions permanent electronic records l Preserves electronic records l Provides access to electronic records

Current Media Standards l Transfer Media è 9-track open reel tapes è 3480 cartridges è CD-ROMS New!  FTP & DLT New!

Archival Media l Archival Media è 9-Track Tapes to 1992 è 3480 class cartridges from 1992 to present

Archival Media l Previous Studies è NARA technology assessment report, June 1988 è Media Stability Studies: Final Report, July 1994, NML

Archival Media Study l Why? è Obsolescence è Larger file sizes è Demand è Benefits to the archives community

Archival Media Study l Objective - To determine the stability and life expectancies of denser magnetic, in particular, IBM 3590, Digital Linear Tape (DLT), and Super DLT. l Goal - Compare tapes, evaluate, and select most suitable dense storage media.

Archival Media Study l Time period and funding è $287K è October 2001 through June 2002 è Final report end of July 2002

Archival Media Study l Tests è Aging è Binder hydrolysis è Resistivity è Friction è Error study è Degradation

Tests l Aging Study - subject tapes to 40C/50%RH, 50C/75%RH. è Object: To determine changes in the recording media resulting from environmental exposure è Results: DLT exhibited least magnetic property changes

Tests l Binder Hydrolysis and Lubricant Study è Object: To determine binder hydrolysis and lubrication content changes è Results: Hydrolysis minimal for all samples and little change

Tests l Physical Property Study è Object: To determine the physical and electrical changes è Results: SDLT changed least

Tests l Error Study è Object: To determine the error profile changes (UBER and STE) è Results: DLT IV showed few errors

Tests l Degradation Study è Object: To determine analog recording capability changes è Results: SDLT most stable

Business Issues l Pricing, Availability, and Value è 3590 drive expensive è DLT IV and SDLT hold more data è 3590 tapes least expensive è DLT IV and SDLT better buy è DLT IV readily available

Business Issues l Availability and Access è Products are mature and readily available è SDLT first of new generation of drives è 3590 last of old generation

Business Issues l Pending items and other issues è Life expectancy models è Final recommendation è Evaluation of single tapes è Procedural changes è What happens if 3480 support goes away?

Communications l Questions/comments? Michael R. Carlson Telephone: 301-837-1578 E-Mail: michael.carlson@nara.gov Fax: 301-837-3681 THANK YOU!
